While once again held captive by the NYC Mass Transit Authority, a "Christian" decided to preach to us on how we were all going to hell for 15 minutes while we were stuck between stops. I haven't decided if this individual is a zealot or just plain crazy.

When we reached the next stop and the subway doors opened, some irate passenger grabbed the mans Bible and threw it off the train. I'm not condoning Bible Thrower Man, but Preacher Man did have to run off the train to get his Bible back.

My definition of a religious zealot is a person that approaches everything from a holier than thou perspective. One of the most important things that Jesus taught, or tried to teach, was compassion for our fellow man and woman. There are many who claim to be christian that are not understanding and compassionate. That is very wrong!

To me its one who takes a belief and goes over the top with it. Fanatic comes to mind.

One who insists that others change what they are doing to appease their faith-based sensibilities. Particularly, one who seeks legal enforcement to forcibly alter others' core tenets, common practices, or ancillary displays of faith.

IMHO, this definition applies equally to those with aggressive religious beliefs as well as those with aggressively anti-religious or atheistic beliefs.

that was my idea of the word zealot too, then i checked the web and learned that zealot has a broad range of definitions, all the way from some politically warring jews to true believer, and many in between.
thanks sister jean, i will not want to use word 'zealot' again. it is just too ambiguous. ..;]

For me, it's a believer that takes their religion's beliefs literally to the point of being fanatical and becoming vitriolic in the process.

A passionate, often violent believer. I think originally it was some kind of anti-roman jewish movement, but the word has spread to cover all hardline religious behaviours
Wasnt Paul described as a zealot before he converted?
