Can Eating the Same Thing Over and Over Again Help You Lose Weight?

According to Time magazine, a new study shows that repetitive eating habits could aid people in losing weight, even if the food they're eating happens to be something unhealthy, like pizza.

But even we can see some flaws in the study.

In the new study, University of Buffalo nutritionist Leonard Epstein and his colleagues recruited 32 women — half of them obese, half nonobese – and divided them into two groups, also with equal numbers of overweight and normal weight subjects.

The women were instructed to perform an assigned task for 28 minutes, after which they were given 125-cal. portions of macaroni and cheese and allowed as many additional helpings as they wanted.

All of the women went through five such 28-min. sessions — the only difference was, half of them did so on five consecutive days and half came back once a week for five weeks.

Not surprisingly, the women who had macaroni and cheese five days in a row reduced their intake by 30 calories a day at the end of the experiment, while the women who had it once a week increased their intake by 100 calories.

Still, this method only makes sense if you're somehow able to keep yourself from buying anything else once you've gotten sick of eating macaroni and cheese.

Why do people make losing weight so complicated?
    Eat less, move more.
That's all there is to it, which I can say from experience.

Maybe, but I am sure that you don't have to have a study to figure that out.

I wonder if our taxes paid for this research? Well, lets see...at about 125 cal. portions three times a day, that would be about, 375 cal. a day. Of course they would drop a few more caories as they aren't adding anything else to bring up more calories. And of course the women that had it once a week would get bored and add more food to it, which would increase their intake. the best fat burners in the world are fruits, salads [ vinager and olive oil ] and veggies. And you can eat a lot of these along with water and a lemon in it. And a little added meat, etc in a few short days. A multi vitamin once a day is good too. This is what I do when I gain a wee bit to much. It works for me. It may work for you, but that's up to you...you know what your body can do and not do.

A balanced diet with a verity of healthy food in modest serving sizes will do more than a diet that restricts you to only one or two types of food. This will allow you to have a treat, once and a while in small portions, to help keep you on tract.

If you eat the same thing over and over, you're going to learn to hate it and eat less. you're gonna find something else to eat and do so by the tonne! That's where cake comes in! I tried eating nothing but cake for a week and gained 5lbs. I loooooveeee the cake!!

Taking it to the extreme of just eating mac and cheese doesn't make much sense, but if you focus on a few things that are low cal/fat etc it's easier to remember when you are trying to lose weight. You go to the grocery store and buy chicken breasts, breakfast bars, ground turkey, veggies...then you eat them frequently and it takes some of the pain out of trying to plan meals every day.

You are better to fuel your body with cals vs starving yourself or avoiding a meal so yes that occassional treata of a pizza slice or big mac isn't going to kill you.

Reason I run 60K a week so I can eat that stuff without the guilt!

I think the McDonald's generation proves that theory wrong. I eat McDonald's once or twice a tear and it doesn't seem as tasty as it used to be or my palate has changed.

If you eat a donut over and over again, you're not gonna loose weight. Eat all the unhealthy foods you want and you'll swell. You should eat healthy and eat junk in moderation.

I've been eating macaroni over and over again. I seem to be getting thinner, but I think that's all baby fat, and the fact that I eat less.

I think I just answered my own question XD

    From personal experience, no.

Your body responds well to changes. Similar to the way it responds better to changing up an exercise routine.

All this does is make you sick of the food, which may lead to decreasing portions out of distaste.

I would have no idea, I lose weight automatically. But when you eat the same thing a lot, you get sick of it, and eat less and less.

Even if all you had to eat was ice cream, I guarantee you you would still get tired of it, and eat less.

In fact, to the extreme, you would probably get to a point where you would only eat enough to stay alive.

Another, "I can't believe they spent time and money on this" study.

If the food is healthy of course... I will lose up to 5 pounds over a period of eating lots of turnip greens for dinner on a daily basis for a week or so... but no you'll get fat if you eat McDonalds every night for a month straight.

eating a balanced diet, size portioning, and exercise are what you need to take it off and keep it off. but why are we all so obsessed with being skinny. its unhealthy.
