Miss Delaware Kayla Martell is just like any other beauty queen hoping to take home the big prize at next week's Miss America pageant.
But there is one slight difference: Martell is bald.
The 22-year-old beauty has alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that attacks hair follicles and results in the loss of hair on the scalp and other parts of the body, according to ABCNews.com. More than 4.7 million Americans have the skin disease.

But the stunning Martell is not letting the disease stop her in her quest to become Miss America.
"I decided to use my crown to show that it is time we redefine what it really means to be beautiful," Martell told ABC. "To me, beauty is a part of your soul...You can be 'beautiful' on the outside and 'ugly' on the inside...But confidence and compassion are the real makeup of a beautiful person."
Advocates say Martell is not only showing exemplary courage in coming out without a wig or head scarf -- she is also inspiring others with alopecia.
"[This] lets people with alopecia areata know they are not alone and that they can do anything they want to do," Vicki Kalabokes, president and CEO of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, told ABC.
We think Martell has a shot at the crown and the sash -- and so does she.
"If I am crowned Miss America, it would be an opportunity to lead by example, redefine the 'ideal' and show young people that beauty really does come in all different packages," she said. "And even bald can be beautiful."
What do you think? Can Martell win the pageant?

Yes the girl is pretty, but with hair she would be much prettier.
and yet, magazines have shaved headed women and so too do catwalks. so maybe if she can want to be that hollow for perfectionism in other aspects as she is beautiful facially.
And her eyebrows, hope it's cause of her disease, I'm tired of this super-thing fashion
Where in the rulebook does it say that Miss America must have a full head of hair?
I think she has as much a shot at the title as any other contestant.
