A jewelry shop owner in Garden Grove, CA, open fired on five masked men attempting to rob her; at least one of the five thieves was armed.

“Our official recommendation is that business owners should not take the law upon themselves,” said Garden Grove Police Lt. Jeff Nightengale. “It is difficult because when you start shooting guns those rounds can end up anywhere. We would rather have the crime happen and have good witnesses rather than putting someone’s safety in jeopardy.”

ABCNEWS.GO.COM reports:
On Wednesday, five masked men poured into a jewelry store in a strip mall in Garden Grove, Calif., expecting to carry out a simple smash and grab robbery. But within less than a minute, they discovered they were no match for the store’s owner, a gray-haired woman whose finger seems quite comfortable on the trigger.

Nothing would be what it is,
Because everything would be what it isn't.
And contrary-wise -what it is, it wouldn 't be.
And what it wouldn't be, it would.

What are you going to just stand there and watch your hard earned money walk out the door? We need to take seriously these thieves and they need to understand a life of crime could cost them seriously.

The citizen is the first line of defense against crime.

The police are janitors who clean up the mess after a crime is committed.

I would have pursued them and made sure each was dead.

The more ruthless civilians and store owners get in a confrontation with criminals, the fewer crimes would happen. These guys should fear for their lives every time they think about doing something like this. The more the public retaliates, the more criminals will think twice. Police can't be everywhere, so either take the law into your own hands, or be another name in the obituaries.

Basically, Lt. Nightengale would rather have a dead business owner than have a "good witness" -- seriously? We can't protect what is ours?

Of course the police want the crime to happen rather than a bullet end up in a criminal, I'm professionally trained to take down someone in a gun fight. I go to the range 10x more than an average police officer who goes to the range likely to only qualify once or twice a year so who would you rather have shooting a criminal. Plus most likely those robbers won't be caught and that merchandise won't be recovered so there's that to take into account. Also note there is no such thing as a "good" witness; most witnesses are crap and the police know it. Three people will give three different perspectives of the same event, as a first year criminal justice student can tell you.

The police HAVE to say that. Gotta protect their jobs doesn't they? But if they can't BE there when it counts, responsibility for keeping safe reverts to the individual. Do you really believe criminals are BETTER shots than trained, legally carrying, citizens?

Only problem being that in England we probably wouldn't be allowed to have a gun as protection in a store of any kind.

When you consider how many people have died simply by trying to follow instructions and do no harm then it is well past time store owners have the right to protect themselves and their customers by any means required.

I live in a state that has an open carry law. Anyone now can walk down the street with a gun as long as it is in a hostler and the safety is on. You don't even need a permit. The strange part is you do need a permit to carry concealed. As a result people should have a right to protect themselves and property because the government has now allowed everyone to carry. Our wild west mentality will indeed cost us dearly. Only a matter of time.

If I felt threatened by armed thugs in my establishment, damned straight. The cops aren't required by law to save anyone's butt except their own. I sure as hell don't want to place my life into the hands of some negotiator. I'd do my best to end the BG's day, right there and now.
