California Couple Invents Fruit-Flavored Envelopes: Do You Write Handwritten Letters?

In a time when people prefer to communicate by text or e-mail, a husband-wife team is trying to bring back the art of letter writing with a new line of fruit flavored envelopes.

Flavorlopes, which were invented in the family’s kitchen, come in five standard flavors: apple, cherry, grape, orange, and strawberry. The company will also offer a line of Seasonal Lopes that will taste like candy canes, candy corn, caramel apples, chocolate, eggnog, ginger bread and pumpkin spice.

The Flavorlopes website explains, “Even in the age of the computer, we are all faced with the dreaded lick of an envelope on a day-to-day basis. With enthusiasm and confidence in the spirit of the American entrepreneur, we hope to take a basic office product that has been around for 150 years, and reinvent the envelope with a flavorful experience that is sure to delight the taste buds and put a smile on your face.”

At $9.99 for 25 envelopes, Flavorlopes are much more expensive than standard envelopes—even the QuickStrip kind that eliminate the need for licking. However, they are incredibly novel and (with their coordinating note cards) are beautifully designed.

Anyhow, all this talk about envelopes got us wondering: Do you write handwritten letters?

I think a mint or vanilla flavor would be better than fruit.

Been a long, long time since I sent my last handwritten letter, back when I was still a middle-school student, I think. I used to write those a lot, then the internet age came long...

I don't really have anyone to write letters to any more. My grandparents are all dead. I communicate with my paternal aunt and cousins via the Internet, and tend to communicate with my maternal aunt second-hand via my mother. I suppose I really should write her now and then.

If you love your aunt, drop her a handwritten note. I guarantee it will make her day!

Our postal service believes the rate for sending a letter needs to increase every year, and my thought is I receive mostly junk mail so perhaps we need to lay off some folks and reduce the overall cost.

The last time I did I was 9..and it was because our teacher thought it would be a good experience to recieve a letter in the mailbox.

But if we're talking about the kind of letter we right for a birthday or something and we give it to them in person that's another matter. But an honest to goodness letter that gets sent to the post office? no.

Actually, you're supposed to lick it BEFORE it goes through the postal process.
  • AngelaDuke Dyonus 2012/06/11 18:27:24

Lol thats what i get for just reading the question and not the description I guess
  • Vennie AngelaDuke 2012/06/12 00:58:28

Um, but when you write a letter, nothing has been through the postal service yet except the stamps you bought--and they are stick-on now and do not require licking. Even if you don't want to lick an envelope there are self-sealing envelopes and also neat little gizmos that moisten them for you.

I barely use snail mail at all... for anything. I bought four books of forever stamps like three years ago and I still have almost three full books left.

Sometimes it seems to be the best way. I don't go along with scented envelopes though we have enough scents around that creat allergies as it is.
