California Couple Invents Fruit-Flavored Envelopes: Do You Write Handwritten Letters?

In a time when people prefer to communicate by text or e-mail, a husband-wife team is trying to bring back the art of letter writing with a new line of fruit flavored envelopes.

Flavorlopes, which were invented in the family’s kitchen, come in five standard flavors: apple, cherry, grape, orange, and strawberry. The company will also offer a line of Seasonal Lopes that will taste like candy canes, candy corn, caramel apples, chocolate, eggnog, ginger bread and pumpkin spice.

The Flavorlopes website explains, “Even in the age of the computer, we are all faced with the dreaded lick of an envelope on a day-to-day basis. With enthusiasm and confidence in the spirit of the American entrepreneur, we hope to take a basic office product that has been around for 150 years, and reinvent the envelope with a flavorful experience that is sure to delight the taste buds and put a smile on your face.”

At $9.99 for 25 envelopes, Flavorlopes are much more expensive than standard envelopes—even the QuickStrip kind that eliminate the need for licking. However, they are incredibly novel and (with their coordinating note cards) are beautifully designed.

Anyhow, all this talk about envelopes got us wondering: Do you write handwritten letters?

    I believe I had scented-flavored, stationary in 6th grade, back in 1976. It is a cute idea. B)

    you get paper cuts on your tongue if you lick the envelope incorrectly, it takes like forever to receive it, and it costs money to buy stamps. Why go through all of that when you can either talk to the person through instant messaging or email at no cost?

    I keep in touch with my representatives on a very regular basis, at all levels of government. I've learned that a hand written letter gets a better response than any other means. Our Congressmen and Senators receive thousands of e-mails all the time, most time they are handled by staff and they never see them. When you've taken the time and effort to hand write a letter and use the postal service to get it there, it immediately gets more attention, it stands out more, and since you've made more effort it demands more effort in the response. If you want to make a difference you have to reach the person who has the power, not some clerk, hand written personal letters are the best way to get there until you can work up to phone calls and personal visits.
    No, fruit flavored envelopes are not the secret to impress, clear, intelligent writing is.

    I definitely prefer to write handwritten letters. Yes, texting and email are faster, but they're so impersonal!
    I don't often mail letters (generally I just hide them somewhere where the person will find them), but I think these Flavorlopes are a fantastic idea. I might even start writing more letters just so I have an excuse to buy them. ^-^

    Thank you notes for sure. I never send any kind of card, Christmas or otherwise, without including at least a brief personal note. Instead of signed sympathy cards I often send a handwritten note. Occasionally I write a full handwritten letter. Old school, that's me.

    I have a pen-pal in Australia so we write letters to each other every couple of months. But on a day-to-day basis we send e-mails, only because it's much faster (and much cheaper since it's international). But it's so much more fun receiving a hand-written letter than an e-mail. Sadly, with my generation, letter-writing is pretty rare/non-existent. It's a shame because it's so much more personal, more heart-felt, and more exciting with letters. It means a lot to me when somebody takes the time to write me a letter when they could have just taken two seconds to send me an e-mail instead.
