California Bans Foie Gras: Do You Like the Stuff?

California is not alone on this one. There are at least 14 countries that have some sort of foie gras ban, mostly targeting its production. However, the difference is that the ban in California not only prohibits foie gras production but also bars shops and restaurants from selling it.On July 1, California will be bound by the most sweeping anti-foie gras statute in the world. Consumed by few, the pricey delicacy made from duck or goose’s liver is lusted after by chefs and diners for its rich, singular flavor and versatility on the plate for everything from hot dogs to ice cream.
Foie Gras

But it doesn't really matter whether I like the stuff or not. There is more at stake here than foie gras. These politicians think with bills like Obamacare being passed, even though the vast majority of Americans have ALWAYS been against it, that they now have some sort of mandate to control whatever we eat, drink, breath, whatever their particular pet project of the day happens to be. They feel they singularly know what is best for us and that we are too stupid to determine it for ourselves. They've taken away trans-fats, and now just about everything fried in restaurants tastes like crap. Within the next 30 years you that survive me will be vegetarians, whether you want to be or not. But you aren't going to have potatoes because they are carbs and therefore fattening. Now that the scotus has changed the wording of a bill to make it acceptable as law ( I believe healthcare is the first actual instance of this) they are beyond activist judges interpreting law and have made the leap into legislating. Congress is now free to tell you you MUST buy a GM automobile and if you don't, they will impose a tax on you. After NDAA, the potus can now do the same thing by executive order. Any thing they determine is best for us is now in their pervue to force upon us, no vote required.

I don't like it, but I am apposed to the ban.

BTW: It's not for the rich.....it's a common delight for the holidays in France and Europe. It's no more expensive or cruel as boiling and eating a New England lobster.

I also dislike the ban; it is childish and close minded. Americans are opposed to fois gras even those in general they are produced by smaller family farms, the geese even live free range for most of their lives, and the farmers are only working with the natural instinct of the geese who already naturally gorge on food yet there's no ban on factory farms in America.

Compare a free range goose that is force fed at the end of its life, causing no pain because they do not have the pain receptors in their throats, which are used to store food due to natural evolution to gorge, to chickens being shoved in cages so tightly that their limbs are broken.

Never heard of it until now. Yeah, liver meat does not sound tasty. My experience with organ meats in the past made me want to drop eating meat altogether and go for vegetartianism or healthier ways of eating instead. The Rich sure have strange taste in what is edible.

This is not going to stop it just make it more desirable to those who don't care how it is made and have enough money. Perhaps making people aware would be more useful.
Oh yes sorry I forgot they don't give a toss they got the moolah up yours.
Legislate till the cows come home people will still do whatever they want with out a thought for anything and without responsibility because they are 'free" and rich yippee.

Chicago banned it back in 2006.There was a huge protest by Chicago restaurants and Chiefs they collectively refused to stop selling it. It's now considered a silent law, meaning it's not enforced but, still on the books. It was originally banned because the duck is force fed through a feeding tube a mixture of food boiled in fat.Often the duck is fattened up till it can not walk anymore.

I don't care for any kind of organ meat. No heart, no brain, no gizzards or liver which is pure cholesterol. It's just gross to me.

I liked it in the past, long ago, but since I know about the cruel forced feeding methods, I banned foie gras from my food. And I can do fine without it ...

I have never eaten it, and won't - the way the producers of it forcefeed the geese to produce it, often choking them to death, cutting the inside of their throat often in the process, and the poor things have to endure that obscene treatment so that their livers grow to about 6 times the size they should be in a healthy bird, all so some 'gourmet' can nibble on a pate made from it, is horrible to contemplate. I would ban it completely, and anyway, why can't people eat the liver when it is normal size - surely it can't be that much different - There should be humane restaurants where all the food is from farms where humane methods of killing the animals involved were used. I actually think when they are asleep would be the kindest - and just chop off the head in one swift blow. I would imagine that any gourmet given the same treatment for about 2 minutes would appreciate just how horrible the process is, and would swear off eating it for ever.

Animals have the same sort of feelings we do - it is evil to mistreat them in this way.

I tasted it in the South of France and it tasted OK but it's psychological if you think animals are not treated properly in the production then you will not feel comfortable eating it. There are plenty of other pates in the world. From a dietary point of view perhaps it is too fattening. People wont bother challenging the authorities on the ban because it is not a burning issue, chefs are usually too busy sweating in the kitchen to be political!

    Foie Gras?
Sorry .. to expensive for me ..
(and I've actually had a taste .. NO THANKS .. don't want any more)

How come all these "Governments" are 'banning' foods at this time?
Do we need an all obtrusive NANNY right into our relaxation times and our Fridges/homes?

    How come we can't .. gasp ..
be ADULTS about our choices in life ..
if you choose to want this for a treat .. can pay for the treat .. then do so ..

Not really the kind of thing I want to dine on every day, but an excellent change of pace. California would probably ban hot dogs, if they ever watched them made. Look the other way and let the marketplace decide.

But I do not eat it. I am vegan because most animals we eat go through much more cruelty than what was decribed in this article.

If they didn't I would eat Lamb breakfast lunch and dinner.

I never have liked lamb. Something about the smell. My mother would cook it and still does, I just never could get use to it. Growing up on a farm we had lots of animals. If I knew my mother was cooking meat from an animal my dad had butchered I did not want to eat it. I only wanted meat bought at the grocery store.

It's banned because it requires force-feeding geese in order to make it. I don't believe that it's wrong to kill animals for food, but I do believe it's wrong to torture them...
