Bubba Watson Cries, Hugs After Winning Masters: Is It OK for a Man to Cry?

Oh no, it's back. The old debate about whether it's OK for a man to cry ... and hug. Bubba Watson sobbed and hugged his caddie after winning the 2012 Masters Tournament by one stroke on Sunday, causing media types to raise the age-old question.

"You gotta love a man who is that comfortable with his emotions," Kathie Lee Gifford said on the "Today" show -- but she qualified that comment by adding that it's only OK for a man to break down in public in certain situations (we guess winning the Masters counts as acceptable). Co-host Hoda Kotb added that she thinks it's weird when men cry a lot during movies, and Gifford agreed that guys who cry too much should "go home to mommy and get a shrink."

Meanwhile, The Washington Post noted how Watson hugged everyone from his caddie to his mother to the pros, adding that "the most closely scrutinized hugs are those between guys -- the 'bro hug.'" Frankly, in 2012, we think it's fine for guys to cry, hug, kiss, whatever they like. Do you agree? Or do you think the blubbering "bro hug" is a "bro no"?

Shedding tears, crying, is a normal human emotion. If a man wasn't supposed to shed tears, perhaps there would be no tear ducts.; they also help to cleanse. People need to lighten up. After all the person the Christians base their faith upon ''wept".

It can depend on the situation.

In this case, let him cry a river. Or maybe a lake.

Yes, macho dumbasses! It is a quality I admire in men, because it shows depth of emotion, sincerity, and character. Men who are cold, stiff, and/or lack emotion are empty shells with little to offer in a relationship.

But why is this question just now popping up with this "one" guy. Did no one notice the MANY blubbering, hugging guys (both winners and losers) during NCAA basketball national championship games?!?!

Of course it is - what a stupid question! - all people get emotional, laugh, cry, get angry, etc. Even the most close marriages have ups and downs, and have you ever seen a mother who scoops her beloved child out of the way of a car, cyclist, etc., and then got mad with the child for getting into the danger. If a family member dies, and someone doesn't grieve, it causes a lot of problems - mental stress, even breakdowns. Picture the woman whose husband leaves for work, and they have had some problem, and they never kissed or made up, and he is killed on the way home in a car crash - how long she will mourn because their last words were spoken in anger. Who on earth thinks these questions up? I guess it is a bit sad that it wasn't his wife who he hugged, but he apparently hugged a lot of the other pro golfers there, plus his mom - I think it is good that he feels confident enough to be able to hug a wide range of people at the game. Picture your standard soccer player - whenever they score a goal, it tends to be hugs all round, and they are all men. Is it perhaps the hug which is the big hang-up, and it's between men? - I suspect evil minded people could see something unhealthy in this, but it is the motivation behind the hug which is the issue. I don't see it unhealthy unless...

I don't see it unhealthy unless the motivation is unhealthy. This isn't, so relax folks, and Gifford too. I was brought up not to touch anyone else in any sort of emotional way, and that produced big problems later in life. I think I am more over it now, but aged 64, I should be, for goodness sake!

Its ok for a guy to cry, IF it's for a good reason. If a man loses someone he loves, it's ok. For Bubba Watson and anyone in the PGA, winning the masters is a big deal. I say it was fine for Bubba to cry. However, there is such thing as too much. Know when to draw the line for crying. Don't cry for the sake of crying, cry for a good reason

I guess Ryan, that I go to movies to see a good story. I lived a very sheltered life - sometimes I find I get tearful because of the deep feelings shown in the movie, which reminds me of how I missed out on the deep feelings in my life because my parents were too controlled to show them. I may experience deep emotions even though they are only in a film, but they are based on real feelings that people have had and gone through. I guess I am educated by second-hand emotions in a way then, but they are real to me, especially if I know that the story is reality-based. I don't see how we can cry for the sake of crying, because unless you are an actor, the process is bound to be real, isn't it?

If you cry during movies, that's your thing. Its just not mine. What I should have said was know when to draw the line for crying and everyone's "line" will be a little different.
