Breast Milk Black Market: Respectable or Ridiculous?

According to an article in Wired magazine, if you're a woman you could earn up to $20,000 a year selling something that costs you practically nothing to produce.

Breast milk.

Intrigued, [Desiree] Espinoza tapped out her sales pitch: “Mostly organic raised breast milk. I have over 500 oz saved and I need to get rid of it. During the week I only eat organic.”

A few days later, she was in business, selling the milk at $2 an ounce to a couple of customers in the Phoenix area where she lives, including a mother with a newborn and a man who claimed breast milk helped his immune disorder.

Most of the milk sold under the table (i.e. not sold to hospitals) is for babies, but there is of course a sketchier side of the market, such as full-grown men requesting breast milk for themselves with no medical explanation, but those requests are generally listed under the "anything goes" section.

Why "ridiculous"? I can think of a few words to describe this strangeness but "ridiculous" is not one of them.

$20k a year to squirt my nomnoms into a bottle? Hook me up to a milking machine and call me Bessie. I'm in.

..I tried it when the wife was pregnant; it tasted awful. Since a lot of pathogens can pass through breast milk, I assume there are safeguards in place, right? And unless it's tested and certified as genuine and safe, how will anyone know if it's even what it says it is, and not cow's milk, goats milk or milk from the family dog with a new litter of puppies?

Wet nurses have been around since the beginning of the human race. If a woman gets paid for the service, I don't see a problem with it. I've had breast milk and find it most enjoyable, especially when I get it warm, straight from the source.

Personally I'd have concerns about the quality of any black market product but this is still a heck of a lot more respectable and ethical than 9/10th of what the out of control thuggernment does today, and unlike most of what the political thugs do, these private consensual transactions do not involve robbing or killing anyone.

HIV and hepatisis b can be passed on in breast milk. I think that if you want your child to have breast milk you need to use your own

It's healthier than formula, which is actually very bad for babies.

Breast Milk can have HIV/AIDS in it. I remember reading about a case where the mother received a blood transfusion after the birth of her child. Her life was saved but unknown at the time, the blood contained HIV/AIDS. The mother believing she was doing the best thing for her child, breast fed the child. Both the mother and child died of AIDS. The mother contracted it through the blood transfusion and the child through the mother's breast milk. So it is not only ridiculous but a possible health hazard.

No it's not, all you have to do is pasteurize it and the HIV is dead.

    I am undecided...

If a woman wants to sell her breast milk illegally then that's up to her. Personally, I do not believe in using breast milk for any other purpose other that what it is meant for.

How do you feel then about the consumption of regular milk? Surely, it's not intended for human consumption.

I do not like drinking milk because it makes my stomach hurt if I drink to much.
Cow milk does have a vitamin that our bodies do actually need (calcium) to build strong bones. Grown men and women, on the other hand, do not need human breast milk because a woman's body produces milk that is specifically for the baby because in the mother's body the baby did not get all the nutrients s/he needs to grow up healthy.

    is that a sufficient answer?

It should have some kind of regulation to prevent diseases spreading. But I also think that it should be allowed to be sold. Breast milk has been proven to help with auto-immune disorders, and HIV/AIDS. (Though with the recent cure, maybe it isn't as needed.)

Just plain frightening... Without regulations? I can't believe mothers would allow their newborns breastmilk from another woman without it having been checked for drugs/diseases HIV, Herpes, to name a few, which can be passed on through it. I'm sure this will be stopped. If not, it should be. I've heard of Mothers Milk Banks, but they are regulated/checked and controlled.

The only caveat I see is the risk of disease, but anybody buying someone else's bodily fluids knows that risk. Leave it be.

Sorry, there is no way I'm letting my kid drink another woman's body fluids. Sure, women should breastfeed whenever possible, but formula is fine too. Millions of formula fed children are doing perfectly fine in the world.

That was in China. And in America there are strict regulations and quality control on formula. Black market breast milk can have horrible diseases, drugs, and God knows what else. I don't think there is anything 'respectable' about buying a product that can harm or kill your kid. Think about the risk/reward ratio.. not worth it

I nursed my son for 13 months. When we put him on "milk" he was apparently allergic, so we switched to soy, he STILL had a reaction. He drinks rice milk now. I wish I would have continued to pump. I was like a fountain.
I didn't eat Organic" but I ate lots of yogurt fruit and veggies so I am not sure I could sell it.
