A new Titanic could be sailing the high seas within a few years.

Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer announced plans Monday to build an ultra-modern, luxury version of the ill-fated ocean liner in China.

Palmer, one of the richest people in Australia with an estimated worth of more than $5 billion, said he had commissioned a state-owned Chinese company to construct Titanic II with the exact dimensions as the original.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said, according to AFP.

He said Titanic II would make its maiden voyage from England to New York in late 2016.

The news comes just two weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, which hit an iceberg on its first voyage across the Atlantic on April 15, 1912, sending more than 1,500 people to their deaths.

"Titanic II will be the ultimate in comfort and luxury with on-board gymnasiums and swimming pools, libraries, high class restaurants and luxury cabins," Palmer said.

The cost of the new ship was not disclosed.

Personally I'm not superstitious but many people are and I'm sure there are many who wouldn't set foot on a boat named Titanic, Lusitania, or Poseidon.

Good Idea

sounds cool to me. I would like to take a trip on a replica of the Titanic, I think it would be fun. Also I don't believe that it will be "cursed" or have bad luck just because it is a replica or because it's named Titanic.

He said it will be a tribute to honor the builders of the first. So why is he building it in China? Just a cheap way to turn a profit.

The cruise industry is a very big business. This will add a new dimension to cruising and once people get past the fear of what might happen, it will be popular. The only down side to it may be the price of admission. It will indeed be a luxury liner and that will price many people out of the running. If I could afford it I would love to take a trip on it.

I just find it funny that Neptune the Roman name for Poseidon
is a Gas Giant
