Ben & Jerry's Stands Up for Gay Marriage With Apple-y Ever After: Great Move, or Should They Stick to Ice Cream?

First it was Schweddy Balls, then it was Lin-Sanity, now it's Apple-y Ever After. Ben & Jerry's has come up with its latest "controversial" ice cream flavor, and this one is meant to show support for a bill to legalize same-sex marriages in the U.K., Yahoo! reports.

apple y ever after

The limited-edition flavor includes pieces of apple and chunks of pie crust. The cartoon design features two androgynous people in tuxedos standing on top of a wedding cake that bears the rainbow flag. Ben & Jerry's Europe is also urging members of parliament to support gay marriage, Yahoo! reports. They also created a Facebook app so users of the social network can marry their same-sex friends, "because everyone is equal and deserves to live Apple-y Ever After!"

"Sticking up for civil rights by a progressive company like Ben & Jerry's goes together like big chunks and swirls in ice cream," Sean Greenwood, a spokesman for Ben & Jerry's U.S. operation, told Yahoo! This is not the first time Ben & Jerry's has gotten involved in the gay marriage debate. In 2009, the company renamed "Chubby Hubby" to "Hubby Hubby" in support of gay marriage legislation in Vermont.

Do you think their latest flavor is a great (and tasty) addition to the push for gay rights? Or should the company just stick to making delicious ice cream?

I wouldn't say "great move" but everyone knows they have always had liberal values. I buy ice cream that tastes good, not that supports gay marriage

Excellent cause to add to all of Ben & Jerry's "opinionated" flavors. Being gay and brought up as a Roman Catholic, I always find Christians spreading hate (as is the case here) amusing. Centuries of hate and ignorance to attempt to enforce one set of beliefs on the masses. Beliefs that promote and have led to hate. While there are countless origins, Christian Antisemitism has left it's mark on the world. The church never excommunicated Hitler. Is that really a community you are proud to stand by? Gay Marriage, like other controversies, addresses the "outsiders" who choose to live their lives unlike "Christians." Out of all Jesus' teachings, I believe my education and childhood strongly enforced have taught me to accept EVERYONE, and that I have no right to judge others. In the end, God will judge us all. Not the men who wrote his "word" over 2000 years ago...

I am straight but not narrow and I think that gays should have the same opertunities to be miserable that straight men have had for centuries.

A very concerning outlook for the future; most people our age are ignorant of homosexuality's immorality. I hope time and experience reveals this truth to them before they make foolish decisions.

Good marketing - go with the times. If they were to market in Iraq or Afghanistan they would no doubt come up with a new flavor, such as ROADSIDE BOMB CHOCOLATE or something equally applicable to the stated Countries...

And of course, using your product for politics is only a "good idea"
when it is supporting "down home countryfied family values."

It's an interesting way to study people and guage thier reactions. There are many social and physiological reasons people are gay. Who am I to judge. I still don't totally understand homosexuality and likely never will but it is what it is. Good luck and enjoy your ice cream!

I don't even understand why gay marriage is a "political issue" anymore. If Ben & Jerry's wants gay people to know they support their civil rights, love it.

Why wouldn't standing up for equality be a great move? Unless one was a bigot, there's nothing wrong with this and should be done more to spread the message to idiots. Absolut did something similar.

There really should be an undecided option. The truth is, it's a BAD business decision. They've probably alienated a lot of people who really like them. But they're on the right side of the issue, so I support them.
