Beer-Swilling Bride: Gross or Great?

There's nothing wrong with a woman drinking a beer. In fact, we've always thought that ladies who enjoy a good brew are arguably more fun than those who turn up their noses at the thought. But a front-page photo of a bride swilling a cold one out of the bottle has caused a "controversy" in New Zealand.

Katrina Hayman, a pig midwife (yes, you read that right), was photographed by the Taranaki Daily News drinking a beer as she "relived" her big day for the Taranaki Bride of the Year competition. "At your wedding you're relaxed because you have your family and friends around for support but in the competition you are sort of all by yourself," Hayman told the newspaper. "It was quite stressful. That's why I was drinking a beer."

However, the photo stirred outrage, and the contest's organizers demanded an apology from the newspaper for publishing the picture. As for Hayman, who tied the knot in March, she said no one would have cared if she'd been drinking wine. "I mean that is just the type of person I am," she reportedly said. "I don't like to portray myself as someone I am not. A lot of females drink beer and it's just I felt more comfortable having a beer than having a wine." Hayman didn't win the competition.

I couldn't agree more. haha I always thought that boring ppl were the ones who drank because that is how they try to have fun, by not being themselves and acting like a drunk a** buffoon, lol but that's not ALWAYS the case haha

I'll probably be drinking beer at mine. Its not gross or trashy. Alcohol is alcohol & I agree with what she said, people wouldn't have an issue if it was wine. That was ridiculous.

I always thought that the weddings were just an excuse to throw a good, huge "kegger" for your friends and family. But like all parties it's the hard liquor that fuels the party. Liquor is quicker is the motto.

Don't humans know scripture? Strong drink is raging, and wine is a mocker. Whoever is deceived thereby is not wise. How many can use them in moderation?

They did it in moderation. Didn't you see what I wrote at the end? When Jesus made new wine from water it was grape juice. Bet you never thought of that?

New wine is grape juice. KJV, Matthew 26:29 ;But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. Both when he made the water into new wine, and when he drinks it in heaven is described as being new. New is freshly pressed grapes.

First, it was for a competition and not exactly for her wedding day. Second, as she so aptly put, why was it worse for her to be drinking a beer than drinking a glass of wine? My daughter got married last fall and the place where she got married supplied orange juice and champagne for the bridal party so we could drink Mimosas. They were delicious!

Ah, but this wasn't before her actual wedding, but a bridal competition. She'd already gotten married. This is from New Zealand, too. It's possible that she was given the bottle and no glass. Obviously, she wasn't posing. She didn't expect to have her picture taken at that moment.

Reminds a bit of . . . "First, medicinal wine from a teaspoon....then beer from a bottle! We've got trouble....right here in River City...."

Actually that was another bride, if you had read the article it said it was a Bride of the Year contest not a wedding. I'm from Taranaki myself and this was only a big issue for the idiot who wrote the story, most people couldn't care less if she had a beer. Taranaki is a hard working, proud farming area where everyone has a beer. And has there ever been a wedding that didn't have beer at it?
