Beer-Swilling Bride: Gross or Great?

There's nothing wrong with a woman drinking a beer. In fact, we've always thought that ladies who enjoy a good brew are arguably more fun than those who turn up their noses at the thought. But a front-page photo of a bride swilling a cold one out of the bottle has caused a "controversy" in New Zealand.

beer bride

Katrina Hayman, a pig midwife (yes, you read that right), was photographed by the Taranaki Daily News drinking a beer as she "relived" her big day for the Taranaki Bride of the Year competition. "At your wedding you're relaxed because you have your family and friends around for support but in the competition you are sort of all by yourself," Hayman told the newspaper. "It was quite stressful. That's why I was drinking a beer."

However, the photo stirred outrage, and the contest's organizers demanded an apology from the newspaper for publishing the picture. As for Hayman, who tied the knot in March, she said no one would have cared if she'd been drinking wine. "I mean that is just the type of person I am," she reportedly said. "I don't like to portray myself as someone I am not. A lot of females drink beer and it's just I felt more comfortable having a beer than having a wine." Hayman didn't win the competition.

WHAT?! A woman?! Drinking BEER!? OUTRAGEOUS!! She needs to get back to the kitchen where she BELONGS!!!

I am of course exaggerating with sarcasm and making fun of the thankfully very few morons who actually have this mindset about women. Calm down now, and let's get serious.

Personally I don't see what's gross. Because it's beer? The way she's drinking it? The type of beer?? Who gives a crap. The bottle is turned away so much, for all I can tell it's an old fashioned glass-bottled root beer bottle.

If you ask me, good on her. I'm not much of a wine drinker, and I know other women are with me in that. I myself LOVE a good cold one with my mates once in a while. Beer is not just a man's drink. :P

Barkeep! Newcastle's all around for the ladies!!

THANK YOU! I can't stand wine, I don't care much for liquor, but I love beer! I fail to see how that makes me manly in any way. If she was sipping on wine or champagne, would we be talking about this? Probably not. I don't get it, either.

    No problem!

That's exactly what I was thinking. If it was champagne or something in a ritzy glass, people would shrug it off. How's that different from a beer bottle or beer stein though? Oooh, because it's all fancy and elegant and more lady like??

Puh-lease. A woman enjoying a good beer is hardly something to start a hissy fit over.

Why is this even "stirring a controversy"? It's a woman at a wedding re-enactment having a drink.
Are we seriously going to start deciding what's okay for women to drink?

So a bride is drinking a beer from a bottle. What's the big deal? Would the same question be asked about the bride-groom?

Huh? That's not a bridesmaid. They're all wearing bridal gowns.... I call shenanigans! What kind of lunatic would let a bunch of brides into one building and give them alcohol? They're likely to start Bridezilla Apocalypse 2012.

And you're right about that hideous tattoo. I wouldn't have thought it possible to make a collection of moles and back fat look even worse, but she found a way!

I'm not a beer drinker, but if she likes it, so what? It's her wedding day. People drink at weddings, including the bride. Who cares what they drink or how they drink it? Some people are too uptight.

I don't know where you're from, and it really doesn't matter, but I've spent enough time in Europe to know that the average American drinks far less than most of the Italians, Germans, Polish, Bulgarians, and Croatians I met while living abroad. And don't even get me started on the Russians! The difference is that many Americans don't start drinking until they're 21 (the legal drinking age), which means their bodies wont be used to handling liquor for at least a few years after that.

The 15 year old kids who get drunk and start fist fights in the streets of London will learn to drink responsibly by the time they're 19. We don't allow teenagers to drink a glass of wine with dinner in the US, so they never really learn how to drink responsibly until they're older and on their own. Treating alcohol like a taboo is what's causing so many of our young adults to binge drink and act completely ridiculous when they're finally exposed to it.
