Beer-Swilling Bride: Gross or Great?

There's nothing wrong with a woman drinking a beer. In fact, we've always thought that ladies who enjoy a good brew are arguably more fun than those who turn up their noses at the thought. But a front-page photo of a bride swilling a cold one out of the bottle has caused a "controversy" in New Zealand.

Katrina Hayman, a pig midwife (yes, you read that right), was photographed by the Taranaki Daily News drinking a beer as she "relived" her big day for the Taranaki Bride of the Year competition. "At your wedding you're relaxed because you have your family and friends around for support but in the competition you are sort of all by yourself," Hayman told the newspaper. "It was quite stressful. That's why I was drinking a beer."

However, the photo stirred outrage, and the contest's organizers demanded an apology from the newspaper for publishing the picture. As for Hayman, who tied the knot in March, she said no one would have cared if she'd been drinking wine. "I mean that is just the type of person I am," she reportedly said. "I don't like to portray myself as someone I am not. A lot of females drink beer and it's just I felt more comfortable having a beer than having a wine." Hayman didn't win the competition.

They really are backwards down there aren't they ? This is during a reenactment for a competition. Since they say that if it had been wine it wouldn't matter then drinking during the competition is obviously allowed. It is just the drink they object to and I can't figure out why. Now if she was chugging her brew as they redid the vows I still wouldn't call it gross but maybe not too smart if she wanted to win. If it had been her wedding day then that makes it even sillyer. Short of doing the best man on a table during the reception the bride is Lord and Master on that day free to do just about anything, including chug a beer if she wants it !

I've always viewed marriage as a pseudo sacred ceremony. I say 'pseudo' because, well, look at the divorce rate and the things people do during these things, this being an example. If you're willing to go through with getting married, at least be dignified when standing in front of the people who have come to watch your gathering and the person standing across from you, at the very least. If you must, drink before you come out to exchange vows.

Like I really want my bride to be buzzed, wrong way to start your life togather, A beer leads to other , but a glass of wine is usually just one. she still would have her common sense about her.

Only because she drank it out of the bottle. It would have been a lot better if she had poured it into a tall glass, or better yet, a mug.

Actually, beer doesn't have as much alcohol as wine...

I don't see anything wrong with her having a beer. Why, is it 'cos she's wearing a wedding dress and it doesn't seem appropriate to them? I don't see the big deal. If there's nothing unacceptable with a man drinking a beer why should there be anything unacceptable in a woman drinking a beer? Provided she's not falling down drunk, but still...
