Looking for an excuse to have a cold one tonight? Beer makes men smarter, according to researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago, The New York Daily News reports. Unfortunately, there's no word yet on what having a brewski or two does for the ladies ...

The researchers had 40 men play a word game. Half the players were given two pints; the other half had nothing to drink. Turns out, the drinkers solved 40 percent more of the problems than the sober players and they finished the problems in 12 seconds (the non-drinkers took 15.5 seconds).

"We found at 0.07 blood alcohol, people were worse at working memory tasks, but they were better at creative problem-solving tasks," psychologist Jennifer Wiley reported on the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) site. "Innovation may happen when people are not so focused. Sometimes it’s good to be distracted." Do you buy it that beer makes you brilliant? Or is this totally bogus?

I've never seen a drunk yet that I thought was smart .... seen some pretty dumb ones though...

That is not to say I don't think anyone can't enjoy an ice cold one once in awhile... I would say a beer or two after a hard day may relax someone, but can't see that it would make them any smarter...

It does make sense that it makes you better at creative thinking and problem solving. Earnest hemmingway was a strong believer in this theory as he always had a coffee cup of scotch before writing.

Then you ought to be "smart" enough to know NOT to drink. It has been proven time and again that alcohol kills brain cells. Maybe it has already killed too many of yours......

Only if you drink too much. Numerous studies have shown 2 drinks a day lead to a longer healthier life and even may be helpful in preventing altzhiemers.
Now when people try to apply 'redneck' logic and say "Well if 2 beers will prevent it then a 6 pack must cure it." That is when the killing of brain cells happens.

I can answer the last part about what it does for the ladies...it makes them better looking. Of course that doesn't apply if THEY have the beers.

I know allot of guys that drink their pay cheques away faithfully every 2 weeks, smart is not something that comes to mind when I think about those guys. lol

You are right. I've seen worse beer alcoholics. I have often wondered if ingredients in beer cause negative allergic reactions. Most American made beer is poor quality in comparison to foreign beer.
