&... "Test Tube Meat Coming This Fall"
"At a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dutch scientist Mark Post, of Maastricht University presented his latest project ... "test tube" hamburger meat made from a cow's stem cells. He notes that the ingredients for the meat are still in the laboratory phase but by fall, his team will "make a couple thousand of small tissues, and then assemble them into a hamburger." He hopes consumers will consider this alternative meat source as a way to care for the environment. Other speakers at the conference note that conventional meat and dairy production require more land, water and disposal of waste products than almost all other human foods. Demand for meat is expected to rise by 60 percent by 2050, resulting in "ongoing global catastrophe."

Yes, my mind is totally open to new developments in meat alternatives. I know it sounds gross and all, "meat from a test tube", but I think it's the way of the future, and it is something that we will get used to and accept as normal after a while. I imagine the companies that will market this new form of meat will know how to do so in ways that make it sound and look more appetizing.

After all, we are moving into the future, the globe is becoming smaller because of the "population bomb", and imo, we need to think about all our actions and what we can do to protect this planet, the enviornment, and the human race if we expect to be allowed by the universe to continue to inhabit this planet. We need to be responsible and take care of this planet as well as ourselves, in other words. We need to make responsible choices with what we eat.

Besides, test tube meat would definately be a step in the right direction towards ending animal cruelty. I've seen too many youtube videos and read articles about the animal cruelty that goes on with pigs, chickens, and cows in big agriculture.

This is a great question, Strawberry.

Thanks Boo. I agree with you about ending animal cruelty. Majority of cattle and chickens no longer naturally graze in fields. Chickens are kept in tight fitting cages, and majority of cows don't roam freely. Many substances are injected into them. While living in Kansas years ago, there was a slaughterhouse. After finding out they had to put pork under radiation before packaging and shipping pork, I never ate pork again, except love bacon. I won't eat at KFC anymore or most chicken take out.

The only thing I see in the is salt and sugar
this is the same food source
The good: This food is low in Sodium, and very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Potassium and Manganese.

The bad: A large portion of the calories in this food come from sugars.

I'll have to see the result first, but I'm happy with the progress. I remember the concept from old science fiction stories from the fifties and even earlier. It's not the first time their predictions came true.

I would not be happy about lab foods, but if this is the future of food survival, and I was still alive, my answer would be either eat or starve to death. Starving to death is a horrible way to go. If only about meat, I would eat other foods.

I try not to eat meat at all, but if food comes from a lab? ICK!! I like my food organic, fresh, and natural thank you very much. I would only resort to it if we exhausted and/or polluted all our land and therefore cannot grow any more food, which I can see happening eventually.

According to the article, lack of land and water, over polllution of waste, could change future methods of developing foods especially meat. Thanks for your comment.
