The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has predicted substantial price increases for numerous food items in 2013, if not sooner, due to the devastating impact of the current drought on farms across the country. More specifically, prices are expected to increase dramatically for meat and poultry, due to "reduced inventory and higher feed expenses."

Will you be turning to cheaper options, like fast food? Or, will you focus on a plan-based diet? Or, are you staying the course when it comes to your eating habits, regardless of price boom?

You are right, we are the cattle and it is not all one side. However, these guys need to step up and make some grown up decisions. They have been squeezing the system and the farmers and so on for so long. When the Walmart trucks stop rolling we are all in trouble.

We now have Oil company's out bidding farmers for corn. Oil needs the corn for government ordered ethonal. The stuff that destroys the engine on your lawnmower or chainsaw or... But it doesn't have to harm your small engines. You can buy (more money) an agent to offset the harmful effects. Cool...
So without the corn, you can count on paying more for a large amount of your daily foods.

I don't have to pay more. I have to shop smarter.

Example: Instead of buying individual rib steaks I buy a 15-lb roast and have my butcher cut it. I have a week worth of steaks and I save over $30.

Yes, things cost more. That's what happens when the government prints more paper money to spend -That money, our money, is all devalued so an ounce of gold has doubled in dollar value over the last four years.

That's why I work hard to earn more because the dollar is worth less.

In my experience, buying cheaper cuts of meat only leads to waste. I'd rather pay more and have it all get eaten than go cheap and throw half of it away because it tastes like crap. I end up cutting corners on items that it won't make any difference, like oatmeal, cereal etc.

Depends. I like a good choice steak as much as anyone BUT the tougher cuts of meat with proper preparation often are more tasty and savory. Buy a crockpot. I'm serious. The slow cook method tenderizes the meat, breaks down the connective tissues and disvolves much of inner fat making it very tasty and tender. Good choices are stew meat, rump roast, corn beef. All cook very tender in between 4-8 hours in a crockpot and there's no messing, just throw it in the pot with some vegatables added later and enjoy.

I use my crock pot quite a bit, but hadn't considered it for cooking cheap cuts of meat. I'm going to google some recipes online for that! Thank you!
