Beef and Poultry Prices Expected to Increase: Will Rising Food Prices Change Your Eating Habits?

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has predicted substantial price increases for numerous food items in 2013, if not sooner, due to the devastating impact of the current drought on farms across the country. More specifically, prices are expected to increase dramatically for meat and poultry, due to "reduced inventory and higher feed expenses."

Will you be turning to cheaper options, like fast food? Or, will you focus on a plan-based diet? Or, are you staying the course when it comes to your eating habits, regardless of price boom?

I'm pretty much a carnivore. I love meat! (Ok, That sounded a little wrong!) But It's true, I eat more meat in a day then I do anything else!

Even though I pace myself with food, I'm a carnivore, I need a big bloody steak once in awhile and so speaking for myself, things won't change much for me when it comes to meat and poultry. It's too bad this drought will bring higher prices, on top of the high prices we already have had to endure. Ugh!!

Everything in the way of food has increased - we have stored things, and cutting every where - our future is bleak

I say that now but I don't know yet how high the prices will go. If we can't afford them then yes, it would change things somewhat.

We recently went all local farm grown/harvesting meat, veggies, and fruit and we've cut out sugar, processed foods, and simple carbs all together. So... my costs have already gone through the roof. LOL!

Meat besides fostering widespread cruelty and unnecessary killing in numbers never witnessed before in all human history and being fundamentally unhealthy is at best an exhorbitant luxury. The amount of land and other resources that are part of the hidden cost of producing it could be used to feed millions of people now starving to death. Anyone with a conscience should by now at least have considered giving it up.

I rarely cease to be amazed at the level of ignorance that currently governs human behavior. If the truth were known in the industrialized parts of the Western Hemisphere the way it's been acknowledged in the other half of the world for hundreds of generations no one would be even asking this question. Look in the mirror at your canine teeth then look at the ones on your dog or cat. Now compare molars. Do cats even have molars? No human tooth is as sharp as the dullest cat tooth. Orangutans and gorillas have teeth very much like ours aside from the gorilla'a sharper fangs yet what part of either of their diets consists of any meat at all?

It was a temporary deviation from an ancient herbivorous diet shared with 98 to 99% of all primates when we were struggling to survive after coming out of the trees. And it's why we learned to cook - to avoid getting food poisoning and crippling parasites from animal sources. Now we even cook apples. But they are really better raw as is almost any fruit. But Sushi aside how long would you survive eating meat raw? And what natural predator cooks their food?

We don't buy our meats anyway. We raise them and then take them to the packing plant to be processed. Cattle and hogs anyway. We just shoot the deer and take it to the packing plant. We raise our own garden and can or freeze what we use. May need to cut back on some milk products, not sure yet.

Fast food is garbage! I'd rather go vegetarian & plant a garden until the prices go back down (which as we've seen with gas prices, once we've agreed to pay a base price for a product, they won't lower past that price) than go on a "fast food" diet.

Some things are out of the hands of the producers, but then again I'm sure not all of the costs are justified. The sneaky little tricks of shrinking food packages and such have been going on for some time. So if it looks like prices are unduly high for certain things then I look for other things. Not much cheap these days, but it doesn't make sense to eat a lot of red meat when the prices are through the roof and when it isn't the healthiest thing anyway. I support those who raise cattle, but there is always a limit. Anytime someone can produce something cheaper then it is worth considering.

The middleman certainly gets a large share of the price we pay at the grocery store. I would much rather see the small producer/farmer at the farmers market keep that money.

We eat mostly venison and chicken that we raise. Since prices have been on the rise the last 2 years we have become more self sufficient in many ways.

Not really since I only buy what's on sale anyway. And fast food really isn't a viable alternative since its fairly expensive, I mean whats a combo meal cost anymore somewhere between six and eight dollars per meal depending on the restaurant?

We have already been feeling the pinch. We planted a lot more food in our garden this year than normal and I have been learning how to can. I think that the rising cost of food over the years has caused us to want to become more self sufficient, as well as learning to eat what we have, instead of what we want. But this is something we are familiar with in the South.

Might not be a bad idea. I used to chase them away, but in this economy maybe I should be canning them just in case.

It wasn't my country, my dad was working there. It was the early '50's and they didn't know better, but I totally agree that the slaughter of whales is unconscionable.
