Elizabeth Moon suggested her idea for this week's BBC FUTURE section -- which posts radical, inspiring or controversial ideas from philosophers, scientists, artists, and other "global thinkers."

Elizabeth Moon wrote: If I were empress of the Universe I would insist on every individual having a unique ID permanently attached - a barcode if you will; an implanted chip to provide an easy, fast inexpensive way to identify individuals.

It would be imprinted on everyone at birth. Point the scanner at someone and there it is.
Sci-fi novelist Elizabeth Moon says that everyone should be given a unique ID at birth that would provide an easy, inexpensive way to identify individuals.

A true WTF moment here, thank God this silly bitch is not Empress of the Universe. Has this dumbass bitch read anything about the Nazi's using tattoos as a "fast inexpensive way of keeping track of people" in the 30 and 40's in Germany?

If it could absolutely be controlled by the receiving individual, an only with fully advised consent, I could see some good in this. But NO baby is able to consent, and the process cannot be controlled. As time goes on, anybody will be able to add anything to the ID, whereupon humanity's unique identities will be forever lost. So DISAPPROVE!

I absolutely disapprove, but it's coming. I've never been so glad to be old. Hopefully I'll be long gone before this happens, but happen it will. Humans are so stupid.

Welcome to 1984, where individuality is not only frowned upon, it's illegal. You will be who they want you to be and if you aspire to greater things, it's off to the gulag with you.

Sounds like the book 1984 all over again. This has to be one of the sickest thoughts to have ever come out of anyone's warped mind. The day that this became mandatory would be the downfall of the human race. What a horrible idea.
