There's a new candidate in the race for the White House. We're not quite sure of her political affiliation, but we can report that she's tall, blonde and made of plastic. She's Barbie! "Have you dolls heard? I'm running for President! Between my family and friends, all of you dolls, and my fab new outfit, I'll be standing on my own like never before! Join the B Party to follow my glam-paign!" Barbie wrote on Facebook.
barbie

Barbie made her announcement to coincide with The White House Project’s EPIC Awards -- as she puts it on her tumblr blog, "an a-mazing event that honors women and celebrates women’s leadership accomplishments." Barbie adds, "I’m standing on my own feet like never before, so be sure to visit my glam-paign headquarters often, and show your support for the B Party in 2012!"

Of course, the announcement comes with the presale of a new doll -- the I Can Be ... President Barbie doll, which will hit shelves by August and come in four different races: Caucasian, Hispanic, African-American and Asian, according to The New York Daily News. Presidential Barbie wears sensible wedges -- but of course, her business suit is pink. Do you find her glam-paign inspiring? Or ridiculous?

In all seriousness, the idea of Barbie running for president is a joke. I'm not saying bc she's a blonde with blues eyes, it's just tht it's she actually isn't the "political kind of girl". Let's face it: she runs around fanatsy worlds with mermaids and princesses and freakin fairies. Barbie is an (regrettablly) a symbol of young girls' imaginations/fanasties. Please don't make these dolls. It kinda kills the fun for the lil ones.

And most importantly I can't her freakin seriously if she's campaigning in pink -_-"

As annoying as she may seem, little girls look at barbie as a role model and that could inspire them.

Just like Barbie Astronaut, Stewardess, Viking Princess, or any of the dozens of other "special, limited-edition" dolls, it is a sales gimmick by Mattel to sell dolls. It has nothing to do whatever with "empowering" anyone other than Mattel's board members and major stockholders.

Such is the nature of big business.

BTW: Did anyone else notice how much 1990s Ken looks like Christopher Walken? Scary!

TRY STUPID! Barbie is not even a real woman; shes a flaky unrealistic toy that gives kids low self esteem cause she is impossible to look like (not to mention too tall)...

It is high time there was a reflection of women in politics. Why not Barbie??? There is nothing wrong with Mattel giving Barbie a political platform. After all there are women in congress, as head of state, as governors, and city officials. A doll to represent that is a great idea.

The fact that she is fictional is where the beauty lies, she doesnt represent the political platforms of US politics and she isnt based on any particular person which means that EVERY little girl can play with her barbie doll and imagine herself as the next political candidate.

I love it. It's great for kids to get politically involved at a young age so they can determine where they stand on issues. It's also important to know that ANYONE can grow up to be ANYTHING. I think it's great!

Hey, I think it's actually inspiring. It's a good way to teach little girls that they can be anything their little hearts desire as long as they follow their dreams. Barbie has been an icon for little girls for generations, and well, who knows? Maybe Barbie could make a good president.
