Was it an increase in malaria in Africa? I remember (vaguley) hearing it used as an example of "untended consequences" like when the Chines killed off the sparrow to stop them eating the seeds, so there were no birds to eat the insects, caused a famine.

It helped to help the number of bald eagles to increase to the point that they're no longer on the endangered species list, and close to becoming extinct.

although a few outbreaks of malaria occurred after DDT was banned, its banning gave rise to more grebes surviving, more northern pike in our lakes, more eagle hatchlings, and of course fewer human side effects.

It almost made the eagle population become extinct, DDT was causing the eagle's egg shells to become extremely thin.

BUT, should have been done in a more controlled way while alternatives were found and first promoting more controlled use... Like so many things we go overboard to the port and then get back on board and go off the starboard side.

It helped eagles and other birds to survive. Can't say if it caused deaths or not. Its use helped keep mosquitoes down but it probably killed mosquito predators too. Such as bats and night flying birds. Not enough info to say for sure.
