Entire communities have been lost. Over 700 homes homes gone, and counting..

65 people have perished, and that number WILL rise.

Over 4000 volunteers, fire fighters, police and emergency services have been battling the fronts, and struggle to gain control.

Australian state, Victoria, have been devastated by one of the worst bushfires in the states history over the last 72 hours; reminiscent of the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983, which claimed 47 lives.

Survivors are gathering around surrounding communities with only the clothes on their back, and nothing to return to, unsure of whether their friends and neighbours made it out alive.

New South Wales is also battling a number of fires, and many remain burning out of control. Many fires suspected of being deliberately lit.

Queensland, Australia's sunshine state is half way under water, as the North has suffered torrential rain for the last week. The area being declared a disaster zone. Many towns and home under 6 feet of water, and all power cut off.

Please. Spare a thought for the Aussies battling to survive during this horrid week. Please keep them in your prayers, thoughts and hearts. Please lights candles for those who have lost their lives, and wish a speedy recovery for those who have been injured.

I live in Victoria, about 30 kilometers away from where the worst of the fires were
my dad's a fireman and he was supposed to be going on one of the teams on friday night, he didn't have to because the weather turned out to be not as bad as they'd expected but it wouldn't have been the first time
its horrible all this shit happening on the east coast
i'm lucky not to have been affected much though, considering how close it got
a fire started only 5-10 km away from where i live
    =S
    that was scarey

    Where about do you live?

I used to work in Kinglake where a lot of the worst of it was, so it was a bit hard to watch it from so far up here.

Just horrible. Especially in light of the fact the fires might be set on purpose. Who would do such a thing?

I always felt a close attraction, a kinship really, with Australians. I hope this tragedy passes soon and the terrible suffering will end as quickly as possible.

Yeah that can't be easy. Actually knowing, no matter how short or long an encounter, the people losing everything is painful. I hope things turn around so that the clean-up can begin and everyone gets taken care of long enough to get back on their feet.

The Gov. better stick it's guns and charge those that started these fires with murder/manslaughter, as promised. Unfortunately the death toll has now risen to 108 and counting. It has now been declared the worst natural disaster in Australian history.

Just been reading about this online, the death count is now up to 108 with hundreds more badly injured.

It's so terrible, so many people have lost their homes or even their entire towns.

It's been confirmed that at least some of the fires were started by arsonists, to think that people could be so irresponsible and reckless to endanger so many lives!! i hope they are caught and charged with murder!

It's just awful beyond words, God bless all those who have lost family members and homes.

caught charged murder awful god bless lost family members homes

It is horrible. There is nothing more to say. Maybe instead of bailing out banks who'll squander the money, we can send the money there to help.

This is an absolute tragedy. I really feel for the families of every disaster, though particularly in Cairns because we were just up that way. Houses are having to have their food air lifted in because all roads are blocked and it really is a crisis. It would be awful to loose your house to a fire, let alone a family member. I remember when Brisbane was flooded just a few months ago, people couldn't iron their clothes because of the lack of electricity and were sleeping on wet mattresses because the water was pouring in and they couldn't stop it.

These poor people. I'm so glad though, that we have such dedicated workers that are trying to fix this.

Thank you for bringing this to the attention of people, I have a feeling that most members of this site believe that America is the only country that has problems.
