Starting this December, branding and logos from cigarette companies cannot be displayed anywhere on cigarette packages in Australia. According to CBS News, "the packs will instead come in a uniformly drab shade of olive and feature graphic health warnings and images of cancer-riddled mouths, blinded eyeballs and sickly children." The government hopes the new packs will make smoking as unglamorous as possible.

Yet another example of government attempting to dictate how people live their lives. Government has thrown out the principle of personal responsibility by placing blame on things. Cigarettes do not kill people, misusing them does. Twenty ounce sodas do not make people any fatter than twenty ounce lattes but misusing them does. Government has also maligned the fast food industry which is a useful, lawful enterprise because some people over indulge and become obese, that is the responsibility of people who eat too much not the responsibility of fast food. Lastly, we hear "Guns kill people!" Guns do not kill people, people kill people. Left to themselves all guns can do is slowly rust away.

What we need is for government to get the hell out of our lives and leave us alone!

I hate the Australian stereotype. We aren't all like that. We don't all say "mate" and "luv" and drink beer. We don't all live in country towns, complaining about the rabbits and the foxes. And we don't ride kangaroos. They wouldn't be able to hold our weight.

I was bringing up an example of commonly heard American stereotypes from around here. I take offence to the comment about Australians. I don't really believe the American stereotype.

the message has been being put out for 30 years now, but when the US Government gives subsidies to tobacco growers, and tobacco is one of the largest exports, the government is playing both sides of this issue.

I understand that smoking is falling to wayside, fine whatever but to ban advertising on their own products impedes free enterprise. To me it is just another way for the government to control one more aspect of my life.

Do these jokers honestly believe putting ghastly pictures on a pack of cigarettes is going to make a difference? I believe most people - me, included - buy food at the grocery store because we like the taste, not because we like the way the box/bag looks.

Advertisers would disagree with you...they spend hundreds of millions every year trying to make the box/bag look just right to increase the chances that you will pick their product over a competitor's.

Also, these pictures can and have made a difference. Studies have shown that they do in fact reduce smoking rates.

Where are the studies that these pictures have made a difference?

It seems like most smokers are practically squirming when they argue that they shouldn't have to look at these pictures...this in and of itself is just a testament to how repulsive the pictures are and effective they are likely to be for those people.

Get a clue...these things on the packages are things that are actually happening IN YOUR OWN BODIES. Either handle and fully deal with that reality now when you see the graphic images or do it 10 years from now when you're diagnosed with emphysema...your choice.

I'm not arguing anything, but I have given my opinion, there's a difference. I am well aware of what is happening in my body AND the reality of it. I've seen these images all my life so what exactly is it that I need to "get a clue about?"

BINGO!! It's my choice, leave it at that.
  • bryguy MlssCue... 2012/08/17 09:33:28 (edited)
    bryguy
Nope, I won't leave it at that. I will let it remain your choice; you can smoke and do whatever you want to yourself. But, if these images can save even ONE life, it's worth placing them on cigarette boxes and the studies I just sent you prove that they can probably save thousands of lives. It's pretty childish that you can't see past your own needs to have a pleasant, harmless looking cigarette box even when it could prevent the prolonged suffering and death of countless people.

Surprise! Someone else who can't have a decent conversation without resorting to name calling, "childish" at that. How fitting.

Go on all day for all I care but you'll be wasting your time if you think I'll be reading it. And, unless you have some first hand knowledge on what you're discussing, like the person you're discussing it with does, your point is moot.
  • bryguy MlssCue... 2012/08/17 10:32:10
    bryguy
Don't care if you're reading this or not. You asked for studies and I gave them to you.

And, empirically verifiable studies are worth more than anecdotal "first hand knowledge" ANY day. lrn2science

So you're a smoker? That doesn't mean that you can speak for everyone that smokes and the data is pretty clear that these images can give a significant number of people the push they need to quit.

The fact is that if you're a smoker, you are actively causing these things to happen inside your very own body. If you can handle that reality then you should have NO problem simply viewing these effects on that carton of death sticks you buy every week. It's so easy to go out and buy a happily branded pack of cigarettes and pretend that you aren't ruining your lungs beyond repair...maybe if you have that image placed in front of you so frequently it will become a bit harder to delude yourself.

Also, for those saying it won't matter, they have done studies that show these images act as a solid deterrent and actually do reduce smoking, so get out of here with that argument. If you live in Australia you have access to universal healthcare, so even if I wouldn't agree with an outright ban it is the government's imperative, if they are allowing everyone access to healthcare, to forward this message and this blatant reality to all the people actively and willfully killing themselves by whatever means they see fit. Don't like it? Then stop buying cigarettes.
  • Striker bryguy 2012/08/17 16:07:02

Yes, stop buying cigarettes. That is free choice.
    Then stop supporting Government Force.

"Government force" is also paying for your healthcare. Maybe we should just exclude smokers from having access to tax-payer funded healthcare if their too squeamish to handle such images. I certainly don't want my tax dollars going towards someone who is poisoning themselves. How is that fair?

Ignoramus. WE pay for our Medicare - right off the top of the SS we were Forced to pay for our entire lives. Which money the SS lent (by "law") to the bankrupt government which spent it and leaves us hanging. All of that was not by Choice, but by Force. MY friends do not support Force.
