Starting this December, branding and logos from cigarette companies cannot be displayed anywhere on cigarette packages in Australia. According to CBS News, "the packs will instead come in a uniformly drab shade of olive and feature graphic health warnings and images of cancer-riddled mouths, blinded eyeballs and sickly children." The government hopes the new packs will make smoking as unglamorous as possible.

Yet another example of government attempting to dictate how people live their lives. Government has thrown out the principle of personal responsibility by placing blame on things. Cigarettes do not kill people, misusing them does. Twenty ounce sodas do not make people any fatter than twenty ounce lattes but misusing them does. Government has also maligned the fast food industry which is a useful, lawful enterprise because some people over indulge and become obese, that is the responsibility of people who eat too much not the responsibility of fast food. Lastly, we hear "Guns kill people!" Guns do not kill people, people kill people. Left to themselves all guns can do is slowly rust away.

What we need is for government to get the hell out of our lives and leave us alone!

No. Bad habit, but I don't think smokers should be treated like the scum of the earth.

I've never smoked in my life, but I don't support the government strong arming companies into doing things like this. If you don't know that smoking is bad for you than you are an absolute idiot and if you still choose to smoke than that is your choice. I will not cry for you while you die of cancer or choke on your own fluids while your lungs fall apart on you. BUT, I support your choice to destroy your own health.

That is the stupidest thing I have heard of lately. It's just another Barbara Streisand plan to stop a legal substance. If you have the support then ban them. Kill the jobs and farmers for growing the stuff. This looks like you want to punish the poor with more taxes and BS laws because the Womb to the Tomb police have no balls.

That is so entirely the problem. I had a conversation with a clerk at a gas station on it; cool guy (named "Guy"). His observation on the increased cigarette taxes was, "they want us to carry the whole load." He isn't going to stop any more than the people I knew in Manhattan were going to stop. The poor don't stop smoking, they just stop buying. Cigarettes are the #1 form of stolen merchandise from convenience stores these days. Addiction is addiction. They give heroine addicts free needles but tax the smokers...

Look I don't smoke, never have and while in the service I picked up butts enough to run one of those factories for at least a month. But this is wrong. Ban them and stop taking in the damn taxes.

When I smoked, 35 years ago, those packages probably wouldn’t have even slowed me down. Australia might see a jump in the sale of cigarette cases to cover up the packaging but that is about all I would expect.

It’s not just Australia but the US, UK, Canada and other countries are such hypocrites about the entire issue. Are cigarettes lethal? Then ban them or just quite playing these ridiculous games.

Putting the warnings and images on didn't work, people have become completely desensitised to the graphics, plain packaging wont work, our cigarettes are already out of sight in the shops, the only thing that will make people stop smoking is making cigarettes too expensive to smoke, a vices tax, that same tax should be on alcohol (at the same percentage).
  • Michaelene Jiorgia 2012/08/17 05:07:58

I agree with you on almost everything, BUT I do not believe in any vice taxes no matter what.

The money from the vice taxes goes into our universal health scheme, its like saying "you can choose to kill yourself, just don't make us pay for it".
this is the only instance that i agree with vice taxes.
We already have a general service tax on non essentials.

I guess you don't have private insurance companies? If you did, smokers would be paying double with the vice tax and the $20 grand a year health insurance costs family plan)

Here private health insurance is unnecessary as we have a public scheme but alot of people have life insurance or funeral cover.

Thats the price you pay for choosing to do something that can bring an early death, I am a smoker, I pay the tax every time I buy a packet and I have no problem with it.

I guess the difference is that I do not trust our government to put that tax money towards it's promised use. For example our Social Security funds (safety net for seniors) are collected from all workers (note not all americans), yet our "leaders" plundered those funds and millions of Americans who paid into the system will not get that safety net.
As of today our Social Security program will pay out more than it takes in by 2015. In other words, it's bankrupt.

The funny thing is that we have a privatised version of that (well and a public one), we have Superannuation in which you pay a percentage of your income into your super account and that pays out when you retire and then you are also entitled to a pension.

the question confused me whether I should answer yes or no.. But no, these pictures should not be on the pack.. If that happens, alcohol should have pictures of car accidents on them, lighters should have pictures of houses on fire, sex toys should have pictures of Herpies, Call of duty should have a picture of Divorce, fast food should have pictures of Ridiculously obese people on the wrappers..

    YA I KNOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I SAID NO!

    OK LET ME EXPLAIN PLEASE

    1. I have Never Ever Smoked Period!

    2. I know the harmful effects of Smoking

    3. There is a Warning Label on the Pack

    4. People are responsible for their Own Actions

That being said...... If they die... Who's fault was it? The Company? NO! They warned the people who smoke.

Don't even begin to tell me that at least one time or another that you who smoke have not seen Video's in School about the Dangers of Smoking.

THAT BEING SAID...... IF YOU STILL SMOKE..... WHO'S THE IDIOT?

************ THE GOVERNMENT? OR YOU? ****************

Top idea. It may be impossible to stop drug pushers as can be seen from the amount of illegal drugs on the street, However Where it comes to legal dangerous and addictive substances there is absolutely nothing wrong with impressing on people (using the laws created by the people and for the people) the dangers and futility of the habit and making it look as unpleasant as it really is. As it is we have banned cigarette advertising altogether here. The best the pushers can do is announce that they cigarettes in plain black and white lettering with no brands or product visible. And sell them from only one register.

I know a lot of you out there smoke that's the reality. The reality also is that its killing you and you'll make some lame excuse because your so addicted that " we all have to die some day". i say simple this "if you really wanna kill yourself with poison why don't you grow some ball and do it the fast way".

The fact smokers your not only endangering yourself you endanger everyone you come in contact with while your smoking.. one thing is to poison yourself another is to poison the person next to you..

Your foolish enough to believe your cool to start smoking well we wanna make sure that children don't make the same stupid mistake like you did.

Which is why when I smoked, I'd walk away from non-smokers and, in particular, children. I always smoked outside, downwind, and well away from people who didn't smoke. I respected their right not to inhale my smoke. They should respect my right to do smoke. And, yes, I know the consequences. Every smoker does. I swear the main reason I stopped smoking was so I didn't have to listen so some self righteous idiot walk across a parking lot to say my smoking hurt them. It does when you go out of your way to walk into it.
  • Terrain Atrum A... 2012/08/18 17:03:49

Atrum Listen its harmful weather you believe it is or not be it to yourself or other..

Why do humans live so close together even tho most of us will never speak to one another even passing by on the street? Because we seek the companionship of other we deep down care about each other. When a stranger tell you about your smoking its not to be self righteous its because that person like many others finds value in your life in your presents.

if you just shed the cloud that has blinded you to this you would understand that.

when we see someone doing something harmful to them self its built into us to wanna stop them its just like if you came by a child on a ledge even tho you are a stranger you seek to help them of course smoking is on a smaller scale but still is the same
  • Atrum A... Terrain 2012/08/20 16:52:11

What blindness? I said I know the hazards of smoking. Most smokers do. I don't need someone telling me what I already know.

I went away from non-smokers, but that doesn't mean the non-smokers aren't still inhaling everything else in the air; car exhaust, smoke from factories, etc. Who do you think is putting more crap in the air; smokers or drivers?

I agree the whole system is messed up. Buts that's no excuse for you. If i had it my why cars would be 100% electric and those factories would be Clean but corruption grips our system and people aren't willing to fight for those things.

Do illegal drugs come in fancy packages? Lets just get rid of cigaretts, and every thing that kills. Well good luck in getting rid of nukes, cell phones, (coffee if they can make up if is good or bad) booze must go, cars, back to horses, well they buck and kill people, gotta kill off the horses, (that will really tic of peta) perfume will causes migrianes in some people and that creates health issues, bullets must go, keep the guns, lawyers man the stresses they cause. Boats must go they sink and people die. Funny it was the govt that passed out cigs in drab and made the drab plastic containers so they would not get crushed, with a pocket for a uniformly drab shade of olive book of matches. The tax money they dont want to loose.
