Starting this December, branding and logos from cigarette companies cannot be displayed anywhere on cigarette packages in Australia. According to CBS News, "the packs will instead come in a uniformly drab shade of olive and feature graphic health warnings and images of cancer-riddled mouths, blinded eyeballs and sickly children." The government hopes the new packs will make smoking as unglamorous as possible.

Yet another example of government attempting to dictate how people live their lives. Government has thrown out the principle of personal responsibility by placing blame on things. Cigarettes do not kill people, misusing them does. Twenty ounce sodas do not make people any fatter than twenty ounce lattes but misusing them does. Government has also maligned the fast food industry which is a useful, lawful enterprise because some people over indulge and become obese, that is the responsibility of people who eat too much not the responsibility of fast food. Lastly, we hear "Guns kill people!" Guns do not kill people, people kill people. Left to themselves all guns can do is slowly rust away.

What we need is for government to get the hell out of our lives and leave us alone!

Nick, Australia wants to get rid of the brand logos and replace them with the pictures of disease, all in the name of making people aware of the risk, scaring them, and essentially make smoking seem antisocial. You got it backwards.

I didn't say that. I was correcting Nick as he got the information in the article backwards.

Right! And haven't we been shown images such as these since when? Grade school. Did that stop us smokers? Hell no! They have to think above, and certainly outside of the (cigarette) box ;-)

I do not believe this would pass muster in the US.
I don't have a problem with the yucky pics but honestly they don't work. We smoked when we visited Europe and I brought home several packs to show my friends. Cancer of the tongue, lip and others were disgusting but the people got used to it and continued to smoke.
I even have a pack that has HUGE lettering that says Smoking Causes Impotence. I thought that would stop guys for sure, it didn't.

...I smoked for 21 years (quit in 1983) and I hated it when I did smoke; I felt like I was a slave to cigarettes...it's such a filthy, dangerous, expensive habit that this encouragement to quit (or discouragement to smoke) just might be a good thing..when prohibitions don't work, maybe education will work...

I applaud you being able to quit & having stuck to that but we have been educated to no end & it still doesn't sink, so I don't think it will do anything honestly. BUT I could be wrong.

Wow, I am a non-smoker, always have been, but I never thought it would go this far when it comes to anti-smoking zealousness.

Where is the uproar when it comes to fast food establishments, alcoholic drinks, sucralose, aspartame, red meats pumped up with hormones and loaded with saturated fats, etc?.

People are just now getting it when it comes to sodas and juice cocktails, but they're not changing their habits.

if the government wants to warn the public, it should be fair that the public be warned of the government.

i'm not quite sure i follow.

i would hope the public is warned of the powers used by the government. the government wants the public to feel comfortable around them, yet they use authority against the public. its funny that we put them into power over us and complain very little of abuse. its like we as a whole enjoy being told what to do.

I agree that the public should be warned about the government. I have always taught my kids and my students that questgioning the government is patriotic itself. ALL of our founding fathers warned us what would happen if we became complacent.
The problem today is that those lessons are dumbed down to 3rd grade history class and most likely never mentioned again until college, if the students are lucky enough to get a real teacher instead of an indoctrinator.
The only organization that I am aware of that promotes "civics" lessons for our youth is Junior Achievement.

I dont mean to rant, but everybody thinks the government should back off everything and stop getting into our stuff.........if we didnt have a good legit government we'd be like Syria, the government killing their own people.

That argument doesnt make sense. So you want an intrusive government because it doesnt kill you, while a less intrusive government will kill you? Or..at least we dont have such an intrusive government such as Syria where the government is killing you? Or at least we're not killing ourselves because of government intrusion?

Youre right though. Were far too dangerous being free. It's why our government has been limiting our natural rights to the point they become privileges.

I agree with your statement, the companies have a right to place their logo's on the products. Adding the pics or a health warning it a seperate subject.

It doesn't work, my cousin who lives in Canada has been smoking for 3 years, his father has been smoking for 25 years. They put health advisories, although it may deter non-smokers, which is pointless and hard to prove, it does nothing to deter real smokers.
  • Jacker ... Savior 2012/08/18 03:38:48
    Jacker The Capper
Yes, because they are ALREADY smoking!!

Thats the point to deter non-smokers from becoming smokers.
