Is that still the custom, did you ask or were you asked?

If he says no, then what?

What if my parents thought he was great and said yes while I had no desire to marry him? What if they said no and I wanted to spend my life with him? Parents have you, raise you, are there for you no matter what, but they don't know what's REALLY going on in your head when it comes to certain things.
My mother and (now) hubs didn't exactly mesh while we were dating so she would probably have said no...we've been married over 18 years. If my daughters boyfriend asked, we'd say no because we both think he's a total tool. But we aren't the ones who will have to be around him.

It depends. These days, that's not always done.

Even if women are often seen as little girls who cannot make our own decisions.

    I don't like that tradition. I'll marry whoever I want to marry, I don't need anyone's "permission."

I will when I plan to get married but only if I think my gf wants me too and I like her dad because his answer won't really matter to me just hers will;).

It's a nice custom that shows respect but it comes from a time when women were considered property. If your girl agrees to marry you and you have a job, laugh in the old man's face if he says no. Then run like hell!

respect women property girl agrees marry job laugh mans run

So, it is not less, "nice," because of coming from the idea women are property? Really?
    Okay.

You might ask rather than assume, right? Many traditions come from dark times for some group; marriage itself for one. It does show a perverted respect for the parents but customs do evolve over time. Look at Christmas and Halloween.

I'm not sure if it is still a custom or not, but my husband asked my Father for his blessing before he proposed to me.
