As Drought Ravages Lawns, Many Turn to Grass Painting: Reasonable or Ridiculous?

We get that green lawns look nice and all. But when faced with a drought, is it really worth it to pay hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars to have your grass painted green? According to the Associated Press, many American home and business owners seem to think so.

With two-thirds of the U.S. hit by the worst drought in decades, many are seeing their prized lawns turn brown. Rather than fight back with water, a growing number of individuals are having their grass professionally painted. This practice has regularly been employed in the West and Southwest, as well as on golf courses and athletic fields, but it’s now taking off from coast to coast.

"It looks just like a spring lawn, the way it looks after a rain. It's really gorgeous," said Terri LoPrimo, a 62-year-old retiree who recently had her Staten Island lawn sprayed with a deep-green organic dye.

On the one hand, we think it’s great that individuals are choosing to paint rather than waste water. But, we also wonder why it’s so important to have green grass that many are willing to pay money to fake it.

So SodaHeads, what do you think about this grass painting trend? Reasonable or ridiculous?

What the? Who collects these fines? And they do realize there are drought conditions and water should probably conserved

We don't have a drought here...we are an Island surrounded by water.

Maybe not at thousands of dollars, but it's kind of common business sense to make your store as comforting and attractive as it can be, and people inherently like green grass. As for your own home, well, I don't know. I don't see as much worth in doing your own yard, but I can understand wanting to keep your business looking as inviting as possible (or even more inviting that the other buildings around it who still have hay for lawn).

That was my point too. Although no doubt it has a bit of resistance to rain... though it would eventually wash off, I think it takes a couple of months.

Very. The grass is left unharmed as are all the animals, it's dog and cat friendly =P

That said, considering the fact that some people are getting fined $200 for not having a green lawn...

That's what happens in our neighborhood and the Nazi police were just by last week taking pictures and writing down addresses. With us having a $765.00 water bill last month this makes perfect sense.

They're going to regret it when they have to tear it out and replant. Here in Arizona, we don't do a lot of grass. Decorative rock and desert-tolerant plants look nice - and don't require a lot of water.

Nada, the paint wear off and the grass grows naturally. There's literally no problem with it. Tis environmentally sound.

    O.O Eh??

At 15c per square foot it is not hugely expensive for a small yard - and it IS environmentally friendly (I looked it up). But it does seem bizarre to me. Watching your lawn come back to life - naturally - will be all the sweeter for waiting patiently for it. Droughts don't last forever.

Many neighborhoods don't let their lawns be all gardens and guess what in a drought gardens don't get water either.

Yes but people who like to garden tend to water their gardens often. Where as people who like green lawns either are to lazy to water them or don't have the money to set up a large system of sprinklers.

Look up the word xeriscape and put the paint sprayer away.. :->

. . .And the dyes they use are harmless even if this 'trend' may be completely ridiculous/a huge waste of time and money.

Is it a waste of time and money for women to wear make up? Or to buy a new suit? Or to have a car resprayed?

Appearances mean a lot to people or at least a lot more than they would otherwise let on.

At least more reasonable than wasting water. If it matters so much to you to have a green lawn, it's your money and it's your grass. I don't think it matters that much whether grass is green or not-- everyone can understand why it's not green in hot, dry, summer months-- but if you can't stand your grass to be yellow that much, spending your money on paint rather than spending three hours a day with the sprinkler on is pretty reasonable.

Dumb and a way of ensuring you'll have to replant your grass. Otherwise, it will go dormant and when it gets enough moisture, will come back to being green.

It's grass, for god's sake. Next spring it will be green again anyway. And in the fall/winter it will turn brown anyway. Or eventually when all the green paint grows out. Yeesh.

I lived on Staten Island for 4 years. It doesn't surprise me at all that people there would do this -- their garden gnomes probably don't look as good against a brown background.
