As Drought Ravages Lawns, Many Turn to Grass Painting: Reasonable or Ridiculous?

We get that green lawns look nice and all. But when faced with a drought, is it really worth it to pay hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars to have your grass painted green? According to the Associated Press, many American home and business owners seem to think so.

With two-thirds of the U.S. hit by the worst drought in decades, many are seeing their prized lawns turn brown. Rather than fight back with water, a growing number of individuals are having their grass professionally painted. This practice has regularly been employed in the West and Southwest, as well as on golf courses and athletic fields, but it’s now taking off from coast to coast.

"It looks just like a spring lawn, the way it looks after a rain. It's really gorgeous," said Terri LoPrimo, a 62-year-old retiree who recently had her Staten Island lawn sprayed with a deep-green organic dye.

On the one hand, we think it’s great that individuals are choosing to paint rather than waste water. But, we also wonder why it’s so important to have green grass that many are willing to pay money to fake it.

So SodaHeads, what do you think about this grass painting trend? Reasonable or ridiculous?

This is a bit ridiculous. I have heard of it before but steps can be taken. First, quit mowing the grass down to nubs to make it look like a putting green. I blame golf dorks for that. I have been mowing my grass at the highest mower setting and watering it twice a week. My lawn has been green all summer with rainfall way under normal. Fertilizing twice a year does wonders. The stronger and healthier grass is the better it can resist drought effects.

The grass is still brown under the paint and it doesn't help the grass in any way.

When you have a $765 water bill like us and get fined if our grass is brown then this is a perfect alternative. I should rush out and get some of the died fertilizer for myself and save me a bundle. Hey you gotta do what you gotta do to save a few bucks.

I voted ridiculous but I can totally understand your situation. Who made this law regarding the grass? Surely they have bans on the use of water for lawns or gardens in times of drought, don't they?

Where do you live where you can be fined for having brown grass in times of extreme drought. and where watering can cost almost $1000. Is this commercial property or private?

Private residence with not very much grass. Hawaii...the water bill is tied in with the Sewer and when you water the lawn the sewer bill skyrockets too. We just got notice them bill is rising even more starting new month.

Sure, many homeowners associations around the country are that way. My fiance just got a house in Minnesota and the restrictions are so much in that place that we are already to dump it and find another house and he just moved in this weekend. They didn't mention we couldn't have more than two dogs and they are our family members.
