As Drought Ravages Lawns, Many Turn to Grass Painting: Reasonable or Ridiculous?

We get that green lawns look nice and all. But when faced with a drought, is it really worth it to pay hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars to have your grass painted green? According to the Associated Press, many American home and business owners seem to think so.

With two-thirds of the U.S. hit by the worst drought in decades, many are seeing their prized lawns turn brown. Rather than fight back with water, a growing number of individuals are having their grass professionally painted. This practice has regularly been employed in the West and Southwest, as well as on golf courses and athletic fields, but it’s now taking off from coast to coast.

"It looks just like a spring lawn, the way it looks after a rain. It's really gorgeous," said Terri LoPrimo, a 62-year-old retiree who recently had her Staten Island lawn sprayed with a deep-green organic dye.

On the one hand, we think it’s great that individuals are choosing to paint rather than waste water. But, we also wonder why it’s so important to have green grass that many are willing to pay money to fake it.

So SodaHeads, what do you think about this grass painting trend? Reasonable or ridiculous?

my name is not Wes. Military bases are held to much higher standards these days for environmental issues. most of the "paint" is inert while part is broad leaf weed killer and fertilizer. pretty much everything in the grocery market has worse on it. Before you make an off the wall comment, educate yourself from the source, not from internet chatter and BS. I worked on a military base for over 20 years, 10 of that as prior military. I know what i am talking about.

I've never understood the purpose of a no "weeds" perfect grass only lawn. My back yard is mostly violets, clover, chicory, and ground ivy. I rarely have to mow and I like all the little flowers much better than boring old grass.

Having said that, it does help the economy to some small degree. Those who have the money employ people/small businesses to come and paint their lawn. It gives employment to people at this time.
It's like flowers at a funeral. I always felt that all those flowers for people who cannot see or smell them any longer was a waste of money till I realised it gave employment to nurseries and to florists.

well, to think about it...most of what you see is probably ghetto and serving no purpose...places like Travis AFB in California use a type that also has a small percentage of broad leaf killer and fertilizer in the mix. In fact Misawa AB in japan actually used it 2 times in the 17 years I have been here. Same mixture too. The japanese downtown also use it after laying down sod in the middle of the summer on the sides of highways. it actually helps it grow for when the weather gets better. why not have green and make it not only have a purpose, but also make it aesthetically pleasing as well....from a distance until you get close up and think, OH MY GOSH IS THIS GHETTO!

Why not? Better then looking at dead grass. We get some really hot summers that leave the grass looking burnt. I think it's a cool idea especially if you're one of those people who are house proud.

Don't have so much lawn, use more concrete or other methods. You can always put down new grass seed, when drought is over.

My yard looks like crap, I try to keep it looking like Augusta National but there were too many consecutive 98 degree days. Thanks for the post, I will have to find out where I can buy or make the dye. Great idea considering my lawn only needs to be cut like once or twice a month.

People do this all the time in many other states where water is being rationed. If you really want to save on paint, why not just use concrete and astroturf?
  • jerry.a... Curmudgeon 2012/08/01 08:34:06

concrete? really? that is the opposite of Eco. I would rather have grass part of the time than concrete.

if you want a garden then cactus, agave, aloe, yucca and prickly pear. or flowers like Lavender and Perovskia, Asclepias (Butterfly weed) and Baptisia. that is for xeriscapers. there are always ecological options over concrete...unless you need a place for your grill.

This is whack just get some fake grass!

Or better yet water your lawn, or just wait for the rain to come.

Plus something tells me this isn't eco friendly, also your grass may never grow back as who knows what's in that stuff.

If people do not choose to water their lawns, that is understandable with the price increases of late. (Mind you this comes from someone who makes their living off of this.) However, the choice to paint their lawns strikes me as wrong on two levels...first, it contaminates the water supply, particularly for those with wells nearby, and secondly...those who depend upon such things for their self-worth are extremely shallow individuals.
