As Drought Ravages Lawns, Many Turn to Grass Painting: Reasonable or Ridiculous?

We get that green lawns look nice and all. But when faced with a drought, is it really worth it to pay hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars to have your grass painted green? According to the Associated Press, many American home and business owners seem to think so.

With two-thirds of the U.S. hit by the worst drought in decades, many are seeing their prized lawns turn brown. Rather than fight back with water, a growing number of individuals are having their grass professionally painted. This practice has regularly been employed in the West and Southwest, as well as on golf courses and athletic fields, but it’s now taking off from coast to coast.

"It looks just like a spring lawn, the way it looks after a rain. It's really gorgeous," said Terri LoPrimo, a 62-year-old retiree who recently had her Staten Island lawn sprayed with a deep-green organic dye.

On the one hand, we think it’s great that individuals are choosing to paint rather than waste water. But, we also wonder why it’s so important to have green grass that many are willing to pay money to fake it.

So SodaHeads, what do you think about this grass painting trend? Reasonable or ridiculous?

You're in a drought people. It's a bit vain if you are going through the lengths of painting your grass green, just so you don't have to look at dead grass.

Maybe you should look into those ordinances that require you to have a lawn of grass, and see about doing some landscaping of plants that do well in droughts.

You could just put in some nice desert-scape.. that grass wouldn't feel good, would give whole other kind of grass stain, and looks kind of ridiculous.

When droughts are occurring it is expected that your lawn will not be in great condition. Painting it will not take away the fact that you still have dead grass and could possibly damage your lawn.

It does not seem terrible, I mean if it makes a person feel better, but you might as well put in Astroturf, no?

My yard is 100% xeriscaped. Even without drought conditions, it costs a fortune to water grass out west where I live. The stones and cactus plants look much prettier and my water bill is very nice, thank you.

    Besides, grass makes me itch.

chemically enhancing your lawn is one thing. Leaving it dry and brittle, then painting it something completely different.
If you want a greener lawn, but water is being rationed, there are still things you can do, like water at night, when it's cooler, if you have to wash your car, do it on your lawn. Painting it is cheating in my book.

Under certain situations I can understand. Where I live and in many parts of the country especially with a long running dry spell if you try to keep your lawn green it gets to be an expensive proposition, and perhaps silly when many of your neighbors let their lawns go dormant. Still if you're in a more well to do neighborhood, with homes starting at $400,000 and going up to several million, nothing looks worse in July and August that a 1/2 acre of dried up grass surrounding blocks of such homes.

While I haven't considered paining the grass green, I have thought about putting in Astro turf in some of hard to grow grass areas with dense shade. The big box stores now have it for home use and really, I am thinking about giving it a try if nothing else to reduce lawmower time. Besides I'm getting tired of the yearly routine of putting in new sod or seed, have it good great for a month or two then slowly watch it die then try again in the fall only to have to almost die out in the winter then back to replaning in spring again. ;-)

It's depressing looking at an unhealthy lawn when you could be enjoying a lively one.

Honestly having a lawn is pretty wasteful to begin with, especially if you're in the middle of the desert. Having gravel or wood chips would make way more sense. Having said that I'm sure someone is going to make some knee-jerk comment about how i'm a SOCIALIST LIBTARD or something.

Nice but in some city's like mine you are required by city ordinance to have at least 60% of your front yard covered with grass if the grass dies you get a ticket and if you use to much water you get a ticket

They won't because they need the money and they know many can't afford their high cost of water they raise the prices on every year. Extortion might be a better words for it

It can be done with water soluable dyes...they do it now for mulch as well...

I can see where it might be good for some situations, like a yard wedding, or a hotel, or some place where it really is important, and that continual watering was impractical...
But all in all, is not worth it and money can be spent on something much better...even if you have millions...donate that money to an animal or human shelter...give a couple of bucks to the bum on the corner with no leg, or arm.....pay for the lunches for everyone in a restaurant one day...or any number of other great things....

It may not be as nice as nude body painting but if you want a green lawn without the expense of watering and cutting I think it might work. My brother once painted our neighbor's tomatoes red. Boy was that guy pissed.
