We get that green lawns look nice and all. But when faced with a drought, is it really worth it to pay hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars to have your grass painted green? According to the Associated Press, many American home and business owners seem to think so.
With two-thirds of the U.S. hit by the worst drought in decades, many are seeing their prized lawns turn brown. Rather than fight back with water, a growing number of individuals are having their grass professionally painted. This practice has regularly been employed in the West and Southwest, as well as on golf courses and athletic fields, but it’s now taking off from coast to coast.
"It looks just like a spring lawn, the way it looks after a rain. It's really gorgeous," said Terri LoPrimo, a 62-year-old retiree who recently had her Staten Island lawn sprayed with a deep-green organic dye.
On the one hand, we think it’s great that individuals are choosing to paint rather than waste water. But, we also wonder why it’s so important to have green grass that many are willing to pay money to fake it.
So SodaHeads, what do you think about this grass painting trend? Reasonable or ridiculous?

Ridiculous

Maybe you should look into those ordinances that require you to have a lawn of grass, and see about doing some landscaping of plants that do well in droughts.
Besides, grass makes me itch.
If you want a greener lawn, but water is being rationed, there are still things you can do, like water at night, when it's cooler, if you have to wash your car, do it on your lawn. Painting it is cheating in my book.
While I haven't considered paining the grass green, I have thought about putting in Astro turf in some of hard to grow grass areas with dense shade. The big box stores now have it for home use and really, I am thinking about giving it a try if nothing else to reduce lawmower time. Besides I'm getting tired of the yearly routine of putting in new sod or seed, have it good great for a month or two then slowly watch it die then try again in the fall only to have to almost die out in the winter then back to replaning in spring again. ;-)
Would I do it? No. But I understand the motive.
The grass near my house has died too and it makes the property look horrible and ran down.
I can see where it might be good for some situations, like a yard wedding, or a hotel, or some place where it really is important, and that continual watering was impractical...
But all in all, is not worth it and money can be spent on something much better...even if you have millions...donate that money to an animal or human shelter...give a couple of bucks to the bum on the corner with no leg, or arm.....pay for the lunches for everyone in a restaurant one day...or any number of other great things....
