My father and I don't talk so much. We had a falling out.

My mother is the most awesome woman on the planet and has supported everything I have tried and failed and succeed at.

My parents are very much alive and I love them dearly. We butt heads often, but I do hear their words and (well my mom anyway) hears mine.
