for even though I am in fact .. a Military Retiree .. and Retired again ..
I'm also someone who has multiple degrees ..
sprinkled with common sense ..
and who knows the value of a good comrade .. companion ..
for there's more than book learning that forms intelligence ..
and you can be well educated in the 'school of life' ..
learning in one's own way ..
to be a productive and caring individual, person ..
Shifting the question a bit, I think that formal education is not equivalent to "intelligence" though they are related. People express intelligence in many ways often with minimal formal education. There are so many people that I admire and have learned from, for example, carpenters, soldiers, and many others. These folks have a body of knowledge and can think effectively about subjects that I know little or nothing about.
I think that the formal education system in the U.S. often tries to fit the square pegs into round holes. We should concentrate on what people ARE able to do, not what they consistently fail at. Some times there is too much emphasis on "school learning" to the exclusion of other ways that a person can excel.
When I counseled students I often encouraged them to try to figure out what they are reasonably good at and made them satisfied regardless of what other people think, which is one of the keys to happiness.
uh oh, I'm lecturing...occupational hazard!
i wish i can give you 100 raves. and i hope i can continue to the PHD in my field .thank you sir.
i am a nurse.nice to meet you !
I do recognize that I am extremely lucky to have the opportunities afforded me. I'm the first one in my family to earn a college degree. Some people never get the breaks I’ve had. This is why we need to keep improving the education system in this country and, at the same time, give more people the chance to attend. We need to decrease tuition costs. I know it's easier said than done, but the prices are out of control.
You mention square pegs in round holes. I don't believe that is purely an artifact of the education system, but our whole society. I know there are other nations that are worse, but it doesn't mean it's not a problem.
You make the distinction between intelligence and education, but you also mention carpenters and soldiers. I too, have much admiration for these people. On the other hand, I think it is important to draw the distinction between educated and skilled.
Thanks for the great post.
As for me, I tended to be lost throughout HS, so I drowned myself in books. I don't read anywhere near as often as I did throughout HS, partially because I've found other mediums of entertainment, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten anything.
..long journey with teaching!!!..
