The cupcake trend, widely attributed to "Sex and the City," flourished during the recession and is now bigger than ever -- even though "Sex and the City" has been off the air for SIX YEARS.
What the heck?
Employment in the restaurant and bar industry is starting to rev up again in New York City -- especially in the cupcake business, according to the Wall Street Journal's Metropolis blog.
“One segment of the industry that seems to be adding the most outlets is cupcake cafes. This could be a fad, or not,” Barbara Byrne Denham, chief economist at real-estate services firm Eastern Consolidated, wrote in a report Thursday.
From New York-based national chains like CRUMBS Bake Shop to Sprinkles Cupcakes, a popular West Coast chain, to small start-ups, cupcakes are everywhere. If you are going to a wedding this summer, you will likely see a tower of cupcakes in lieu of a cake -- a trend that was hip a few years ago but now seems as cliche as a seven-tiered layer cake.
Our theory: Not only are cupcakes a cheap way of treating yourself, they're also very nostalgic for anyone who ever attended a birthday party as a kid. And in times like these, everyone is looking for a little comfort.
With a cake business these days, you have to be prepared for either cakes or cupcakes, depending on the customer. There are some really nice stands, and cupcakes can be made just as elegantly as a wedding cake. It also makes it easier for the catering staff, or the family of the bride and/or groom, to pass out the cake, since they're already in individual portions. No need for that cake knife. I'd still prefer an actual wedding cake, myself, though. Having a stack of cupcakes, even with the fancy displays, just looks tacky to me at a wedding. Then again, if this is attributed to Sex and the City, then it's obviously all about being tacky.
I like cupcakes. I make them occasionally for work because they are much easier to serve than a cake. I make them for my granddaughter's birthday at school for the same reason. Some schools won't let you bring home baked good to school but her's still does.
I just got the coolest cupcake book and I'm going to make some great ones for her birthday this year!
That sounds pretty tasty. I wasn't aware of a cupcake trend. I don't watch tv shows that glorify people behaving like wild animals. I'm surprised they never had an episode of one of the girls coming down with VD.
Probably because I'm to busy STUFFING MY FACE WITH THEM!
:D
But i don't get it, what's the difference between a cupcake and a muffin?
my all time favorite things to eat everrr! i basically can live off cupcakes and cake... im happy its a trend!
I enjoy eating cupcakes, not folliwing it by trend.
Sex and the City2 is a major fail and everyone knows that.
I just got the coolest cupcake book and I'm going to make some great ones for her birthday this year!
