Seriously?

I get yelled at because I have my fan on during the night to keep my room from getting incredibly stuffy because I'm wasting money.

I just walked into my parents room... the lamp that lights their room, their bathroom (which is connected to her room) light, the laundry room (which is also connected to their room) light, AND the TV was on.

...My father's not home, and my mother hasn't been in the room for more than an hour.

Seriously?

Me and Mrs. Captain did things differently. We taught by example and never expected our kids to do anything we wouldn't do.

What would happen if you explained to your parents that you were wasting less power than they were? No yelling allowed.

I'm glad that you taught by example. =] It sends a better message than hypocrisy does.

And I actually have done that before and even though (honestly, I really wasn't) I wasn't being snotty, she said that I was, and then she grounded me. Then, if I turn it off for her, she'll come back a couple of hours later and demand to know why her TV/lights were off.

Unfortunately, there's no book of rules for parenting. I have 2 kids. Fine relationship with one, but the older boy wants nothing to do with me. I have no choice but to put that into the "shit happens" category and live with the hurt.

My only advice is to put up with the behavior your parents exhibit (unless it's abusive and violent) until you're on your own. Time does fly, and you can learn how to be a better parent from your experiences. Party on.

Nice... my dad used to be real bad about telling me to clean my room, all the while his room had about 2 weeks of clean/dirty laundry laying around.

That fan probably wasted like .30 overnight Kara geeze will you think about someone other then yourself!

Problem is they're the ones who pay the Electric bill. When you get a job and pay your own way you can do what you want. Until then do what they tell you .

Just because they pay the electric bill doesn't have them the right to be flaunting their hypocrisy.

Besides, part of the reason that we're (and by that I mean me) so electricit-conscious is because the bill is so high.

Part of the reason that the bill is so high is because things are left on all day everyday... like their TV/light. I have to go in every day behind them to do it.

Hypocrisy? Whose house is it? And, like I said who pays the bills? Nobody said life was "fair" when you're a teenager. I don't think they're flaunting anything, they happen to be in charge. You'll have plenty of time to live your own life when you get older and on your own, then your kids will be on here bitchin' about you. Just don't rush it, these are the best years of your life enjoy them.

Yes, I realize who's house it is, and who pays the bills. I also realize that life isn't fair.

It doesn't change the fact that they're living under the "do as I say, not as I do" rule.
