Yes... they could always come to me... tell me things they could never go to their mother with... but also knew, if was something harmful to them or to others, I'd have to take action...

I also had a relationship with my daughters that when they were teens, when most teens don't want to be seen in public, especially in front of their friends, my daughters always asked me to bring them places and would hug me and kiss me goodbye when I dropped them off... if we were walking in stores or wherever, they'd often hold my hand... They weren't embarrassed to be affectionate with me in front of their friends...

    Completely.

I also act as their attorney when they get in trouble and have to go before the evil Judge Mommy.

ABSOLUTELY! And all of their friends consider me their best friend too. BUT, they do know that I am still the boss no matter what. The only time there are repercussions, is when they FAIL to treat me like they want to be treated. Because we are friends, I rarely have to issue punishment. I strongly believe, that not being your kids friend is a serious mistake for everyone involved.

I don't have children, but I was never "friends" with my parents.

At least until they are 18, parents SHOULDN'T be friends with their kids. Repercussions will always be part of a parent/kid relationship at least until the kid is no longer dependent on them, which in some cases is longer than 18.
