A lot of companies are not hiring until they figure out what their penalty per employee cost will be under the new Health Care Act.
(unofficially formerly known as the Affordable Health Care Act but the Supreme Court ruled that the forced "affordable" part was unconstitutional so it's just a health care act forcing people to buy health insurance)
I think you'll see the winds of change after the election.
Keep at it though, never give up!! You have the will...obviously! That's most of the battle right there! ;)
(now if someone who's hiring for a good position sees your "rant" and hires you, THAT would be cool, huh? Ya never know...)
    Great luck to you

I went 7 years without significant work after I retired from the Army. In addition to being "overqualified", I was getting too old for them to want to hire. (I am in the middle of a 2 year reprieve by the Army taking me back on Active duty for a tour). I no longer have hope for a comfortable retirement.

They want the world but don't want to pay for it.
I'm a Senior Data Analyst... but they want some one to over see their database operations, IT department AND Manage their office but the pay is just slightly above entry level. No real benefits, the health/dental bene's are a joke and no 401K contributions until 6 month probation period.

As it turns out, the last company I interviewed with wanted all that and I told them their budget was short sighted and at best not well scoped out.
I offered to consult with them instead to do a full analysis, write the job description for two positions (officer manager and Database Operator should be two different positions) complete with outsourced IT solution to match their budget).

They still pursued the question: How much do I want, but when they could not even state a salary range and my resistance in giving them a number, I ended the interview, took my hard copy resume and and left a card. Call me when you are serious about assessing your needs and budget, but I am not interested in a job, I want a career and I do not believe this is the place for me.

WOW... talk about being empowered. Talk about being professional.
They called me and asked when I could start consulting with them. We're in negotiation now... but it doesn't look like they can still afford me. And I am I okay with that.

I have heard overqualified before, as well as been under qualified, but I learn quickly if only someone would give me a chance. I am an awesome employee and will do whatever needs to get done. As long as I get a paycheck anything the boss tells me I do.

There is no such thing as over-qualified. That is a just an legal employee discrimination term that says "we don't want to pay you the money you deserve in relations to overall qualifications or we think you are too smart or over the desired age to work here." First thing people have to learn, employers don't really want people smarter than they are in most fields. If your are a doctor, scientist or some entertainment fields, then you can get by. In most other fields, you are a threat to your immediate supervisor in recognition and promotion if you perform well and up to expectations. But if your intelligence is feared in the office, loading dock, restaurant even police station, you are not going to get hired. Over qualified is the legal word to use. Next, little less intelligent applicant, please.

I've been told that I'm over qualified before and even though it sounds silly I had to realize that companies that are looking for applicants for a low wage crappy job know that if you have a degree and a good job history, as soon as you find something better you will quit and move on.

I am over qualified for most jobs around here. A lesson I learned switching jobs back in 94.

I have helped friends "Dumb Down" their resumes so they could get hired.

Mid-level management doesn't want people who hold PD's.. but they love Bachelor Degree Holders. so you simply leave off the part about Purdue University.

Another poster made an accurate statement - - Over Qualified is often used to avoid hiring an Older Person - IE: Too much Experience. Not a whole lot you can do about that one. A hard sell if you had your last job for 32 years.

Sometimes your current title of "Executive Vice President of Blablabla" will hurt you if you are applying for "Supervisor"... They figure you won't be happy, or it won't be a very good match. Sometimes you have to back that down to "Head of the blablabla department".

you can be over qualified - for sure.

AND under qualified! I can't get hired in a "starter" position because I have too much experience, yet I can't get hired for a management position because I don't have a degree and haven't held the title before.

Suggestion: Register with some temp agencies. Temp agencies love motivated over-qualified folks. Regular employers are afraid you won't stay long. But ManPower or KellyGirl or whatever is in your local yellow pages (yes, really, look in the actual paper yellow pages, even if you have to go to a library) -- they'll love you.

From there, permanent offers will follow.

Too true. My niece just graduated w/a Bachelors in English. 4 months and many resumes later (she had customer service experience galore) she gave in and went the Manpower route. $12 an hour, at least til the end of December.

For the job I'm currently at, I am over qualified. Only took this job mainly because of location...not saying what it is. Just that it doesn't pay well. It does annoy me that I do this job while others I see with less intelligence are making the bigger bucks. But it does have its perks too some degrees, so not complaining to much.
Try downplaying your skill level, I have found that many bosses like people that are less intelligent then themselves....Makes them feel 'superior'. But at any rate, I expect the employment situation to improve some, after the elections. Should the Repubs. win ...definitely. The Dems. win...I don't think so.
    Good luck too ya.

Not looking for a job. I have been in that position before, though.

    Problems with being over qualified:
    - power: if you know more than your boss, you are a threat
    - ambition: you are only holding onto this job as an interim and will move onto something else as soon one opens up
    - pay for experience: someone with fewer qualifications demands lower pay, even if they can't do the job as well or as quickly
    - boredom: employers would worry you would be bored (for example, a developer who hates web development and knows a lot more would be unhappy doing web development and would always be looking for interesting projects instead of exactly what they told the developer to do)
    - wrong qualifications or overspecialization: you are highly qualified and have the basics but they are looking for someone with very specific expertise who can hit the ground running

Gear your resume for the job you are interviewing for. Give the company a reason why it would be in their best interest to hire you. Do your research before you go in for the interview.
