I for one am. Currently I'm doing a battle with a black snake that's living in my tool shed. It'll be a bitter battle to the very end. More on my battle with "Blackie" the snake on today's MisfitWisdom blog at http://misfit120.wordpress.com

Tools needed: large sack, thick gloves, ...rake. First turn on CD of ABBA's 'Dancing Queen' very loudly...then hold "Blackie" down with the rake, firmly. Then with gloved hands, grab him by the head, firmly. While the screaming wife holds open the large sack, place entire body into sack first. Once body is fully inside, release head, seal sack opening with a lil twist. Place sack into cooler container. Drive out to the deep woods in total fear. Once there, with container lid completely loose...tip over and dump entire 'Blackie' bag, Then on shaky legs, jump back into truck and burn rubber outta there!.....

Not afraid to look at but I don't want to have em crawling on me. I use a stick to push them out of the way when they are in my garden.

I don't like snakes, but I've touched a green grass snake, I think, and it was pretty nice. I would want one.

Many snakes are black, so I can't guess which snake this is. Chances are though, that they aren't truly dangerous. Aggressive, maybe.....but not venomous. If they bit, it's be just a boo-boo.....like scratching yourself with a rake. It's surviving on small rodentia in your yard, leave him be. Believe it or not he's a good friend and will leave you be, too.

Black rat snake...good chance this is your buddy. I had a BIG one under my front steps.

The one black snake to definitely stay away from is the water moccasin.I see them occasionally in the drainage ditch in front of my home when I am weed eating on a day after a storm.They like to hang out near and swim in water.Very venomous and aggressive!

Cottonmouth - know them well. But the chances are pretty good that's not what's going to be holed up in someone's shed. I grew up on a lake at the most northernmost reaches of Moccasin territory.

I am afraid of poisonous snakes.
I had a red rat snake slither between my feet yesterday. I almost stepped on it by accident. It was about 5 ft long. It just quietly slithered away. I grabbed my little dog so she wouldn't bother the snake.
Red rat snakes are beautiful, docile and beneficial to the environment.

Do you know what kind of black snake is living in your shed?

Richard, I did a search of your area and you probably have an Eastern Rat Snake or a Black Racer. Neither is venomous. if it is living in your shed, it is probably living on rodents.
You could get someone to remove it for you. When threatened, both of these snakes will bite in defense.
I used to be terrified of snakes too. I moved to FL and found the snakes were everywhere. I realized they were here longer than me and they weren't about to move and neither was I. So I learned everything I could learn about them, got a book to identify them and found where I could call if I saw something I didn't recognize. I do ok if I can identify the snake and know it is harmless, but still have fears if I can't identify it.

We have them in this area, but I have never seen one.I've had red and yellow rat snakes, black racers, ringnecks, banded water snakes and even one cottonmouth. Fortunately I was not here when the cottonmouth showed up.

sometimes they do... like if its some kind of pet snake or something its fine... but if i see a snake in the water.. or field..... im scared.. and im running!
