Are you a good ambassador to your race, religion, country, or group to which you affiliate yourself with?

This questions stems from a recent comment I received from an intelligent and friendly young lady, who happens to be from a country other than the United States. She also comes from a muslim country which happens to be a good ally to the U.S. It really bothered me that she said I was the first American to be nice to her on this site. Does this upset you as well? And please keep moving if you cannot control yourself and be respectful.
This made me think of how we all represent ourselves, and do we do a good job of gaining the respect of people from different backgrounds than us? Just something to think about.

I can relate to her situation being myself a person from a muslim country that also happens to be in very good terms with the US. I cant say everyone was a "bad embassador", because thats not true however some kept on attacking for no apparent or rational reason, just because someone doesnt agree to the same things you do doesnt make them not worth your respect. But frankly I think Americans (generally speaking) are nice really, I'v been to LA and the people were really intrested and didnt harrass or insult me in anyway unlike England some guy kept on asking me if my dad did any money laundry, another women opened her money box once I spoke arabic to check if the money I gave her was fake, and no she did not do that to those that were behind me or infront of me, I stood and watched.
So basically, very few are rude. I simply think generalization is something that must be avoided.

I don't affiliate myself with any groups, lyk the character 'Nick' that Michael Cera plays in "Nick and Norah's infinite playlist", "I don't subscribe to any labels".

I would like to think that I am. But people seldom see themselves as others see them. I know I try very hard to be reasonable and see both sides of a situation, unless something is blatantly wrong. Then I try to be tactful in presenting my side of the story.

Thank you for your response. It is nice to hear that it is only a select few who are rude. I think there are good and bad people in every race, religion, and country. We just need to learn to judge people on their own individual merits.

I'm glad you have been treated well here in the US. Most of us are pretty tolerant of the beliefs and customs of other people. We were once the 'foreigners' here ourselves. But like people everywhere, it is human nature to be a bit distrustful of customs or cultures radically different that what we are accustomed to. Open and honest communication works wonders in bridging those gaps. Another sad fact of human nature is that there are good and bad in EVERY group. The bad ones make the headlines, so the entire group gets judged by what the bad ones do and are labeled accordingly.

I don't try representing my country or race I think people who judge an indvidual due to that is simply prejudiced anyways but rather I try to represent myself I do act respectful and considerate and have been told I'd make a good diplomat lolz especially when it comes to different cultures and philosophies.

All we can really do is simply be ourselves... no "try to be" about it, honestly...

I suppose that's the group I run with... right?

Obviously, some groups are all wonderful... while other groups prove downright frightening and criminal...

It seems positive that you, Carl, seem to have the ability to "swim" in various currents of groups. Good cheer to ya...

Well we are in the middle of the Independence debate here in Scotland......So one could correctly say that we Scots are in limbo at the moment as what nationality we will be affiliated to. Will we be Scottish or British that is the question and it won't be decided until 2014. So til then I remain unaffiliated by choice.
