Sure, America collectively has an obesity problem. But according to a recent study, the Americans who are bearing the brunt of the bulk come from the rural parts of the country. In other words, individuals who live in the urban landscape are skinnier than those who live in the 'burbs. Maybe it's all the walking? Or perhaps urbanites just prefer salads over burgers? Whatever the case, we'll let you make the final call about this study.

JEZEBEL.COM reports:
A new study published in the Journal of Rural Health suggests that rural Americans are almost 20% more likely to fit the clinical definition of obesity (BMI over 30) than their city-dwelling counterparts. The study relied on clinical data—i.e. people weighed and measured at doctors' offices—rather than self-reported data.
The change, researchers speculate, has something to do with rural food deserts, lack of access to fitness facilities, and that sweet spot where traditional gigantic farm breakfasts meet increased agricultural mechanization. In other words, people have trouble getting a hold of healthy foods, personal trainers aren't wandering around the corn fields (nor is there money to pay them if they were), and farmers just aren't hoeing off their ham steaks like they used to.

NYC I would believe because there is so, so much walking. LA...I don't know. There's a lot of sitting in traffic.
Could it be due to poverty levels?
You forgot all the calories these guys lose in useless protests!
and... gay people love to dance! LOL!

I'm from Philly and we are so thankful that we are no longer the #1 fattest city in America.
I'm a city girl, stuck temporarily in the burbs, and it was a rude awakening. I've always thought us city dwellers were more active than the "burbanites" but I've found the complete opposite is true. The recreational facilities, physical activities, etc are more readily available.
As a former director of an award winning Rec center in the midst of the city, the lack of parental involvement is atrocious. No wonder there are so many fat kids, they have no example to follow except for people like me who forced the children to participate in a sport, any sport. When the city mandated that all pools be no deeper than 4 feet, we lost ALL of our city swim teams, especially mine who developed quite a few outstanding swimmers. That option is GONE.
Do you really think calling someone fat is worse than calling someone obese?
Yes, I did force my camp kids to participate in sport's activities, if they did not want to they had the option to call their parents to come get them. They'd be waiting forever!
My time was spent teaching and supervising the multiple sports activities that were listed on the camp application as required participation. Like most underfunded city recreation activities, I had no one to watch them sit on their butts to watch cartoons. Not one single parent out of the 50 attendees ever volunteered a single minute for their children's benefit.
You are losing this discussion with your name calling and ad hominem attacks. While I am refuting your opinionated statements with quotes and studies, you mock my attempt to enlighted you cold hard facts.
As long as there are people like myself who work hard to help children exercise, socialize and participate in physical actiity the situation would get better.
But when their are "douchy" folks like you with your broad brush of division, derision and prejuicide, looking down your nose at other communities who engage in physical activity dailythat is just outside your little 3 city experience.
