Are they now designing cars so the average person can't work on them?

I tried to change the oil in my ford focus. First I had to remove a bottom cover, something I never encountered with any of my previous cars. Then they put the filter in a place where it is impossible to reach unless you put it up on a lift. I think they do this so you will have to take your car to a mechanic to do even the basic stuff.

GM stopped putting dipsticks in their automatic transmissions a few years ago. The tool they use to check it is proprietary, which means you are forced to pay for a $400 fluid flush that the recommend at a ridiculous 30K miles.

This is why my cars are Asian and use manuals...

JEEZ - that's been going on for years now. Ever tried to replace anything mechanical on a late model transverse mounted Japanese sedan? Try the trans axle - - that's the #1 thing that goes out - FORGET IT. Yes, they replaced the human brain with computers long ago. Computers are not designed to be taken apart. They don't work when their "chips" get messed with. Unless you are willing to invest several thousand on the machine the computers hook to, you gotta take it to someone who has one.

HUM.... I have a fiesta, my son has a focus - we don't have that problem.

They've been doing this for YEARS. I think you can void the warranty if you pop the hood on some of them. :O)
