OR... if the ceiling is 37 feet high, and you only have a wobbly ladder.
call your localstores and ask about the clinics.. and most places have handymen in the pennysaver will do small jobs like that for peanuts
First, shut off the power to the light socket. I reccomend shutting off the breaker.
You take the existing lamp off so you only have a couple of wires coming out of the box in the ceiling, one black one white and one bare wire screwed to the inside of the box. You may find two sets of wires, that means another light is being powered off this one. The important thing to remember is to keep both blacks together and both whites together Be careful with the wires, don't pull on them or bend them any more than you absoluely have to.
The instructions will probably tell you to mount the base first. It will screw into the light box in the ceiling. If it's like my fan, once the base is installed you won't have much access to the inside of the electical box so you don't want to have the wires in the box all bunched up in there, straighten them out a bit so they protrude out of the box before installing the base.Screw the base on to the box but make sure the wires are routed safely and no wires are getting pinched before you tighten it up.
Next you hang the fan motor. There will probably be a way that you can hang the motor on the mount so it's there but not covering the box. Once the electrical connections are done, You will be able t...

There are 3 wires, black, white and green. Black and white are power, hook black to black, white to white, green attaches to the metal box in the ceiling. The ends of the wires should be bared about a half inch, maybe a little more. Hold the wires to be joined paralell to each other with the bared sections even and use pliers to gently twist the wires together in a clockwise direction. Once they have a few twists, twist a marette (little plastic cap) onto the bare ends of the wires, twist it clockwise until it locks. Gently tuck the connections into the box, being careful not to loosen them.
You then hinge the motor into place and install the screws that mount it to the base. Again, make sure no wires are pinched or dragging on the rotating part of the fan motor.
That's the hard part, the rest is just a few screws. Good luck!
If I can do it anyone can
One thing to make sure of is that the electrical box you are installing the fan onto can support the weight. Usually that means a metal box nailed or screwed to a bracket or wood backing above the ceiling. SOME plastic boxes are adequate but they are also specially made for the extra weight of a ceiling fan.
If it is a ceiling fan with a light they do have different wiring configurations depending on switches and whether your new unit has a remote control switch.
And yes... make sure the electricity is off!
But, I can fix just about anything... except for selfishness in others. ;-)
