Are these people serious? These scientists on this show I'm watching think we will be living on the moon one day. Is this stuff for real?

666_Maggots~PassionForGlory BN-1 2012/07/20 22:59:56
We have done nothing but contribute to the destruction of the Earth, so what makes them think that we will be treating the Moon any differently? Also, the conditions on the Moon are far from friendly, so there is almost no room for error in any sort of habitat we would dwell in while there, and as we know, humans have a hard time making things that are extremely dependable at all times. They say that there is ice on the Moon which will be the source of the water, OK, we have done nothing but pollute the water we have here, so how do they plan on using ice water for any extended period of time before it becomes useless??? I love pipe dream fantasies as much as the next guy, but seriously this seems impossible to be feasible.
You!

...you cant mistreat the moon, it's a barren wasteland of well, bareness. It doesn't have a ecosystem or life. Don't get your panties in a twist.

Also i don't think you've done any real research, you think said scientists haven't took any of these things into consideration? It's not like they are saying we will have a colony up there any time soon. It isn't a pipe dream and it is in fact very feasible, hydroponic farming, dehydrated foods, farming would generate their own oxygen. Also there are is approximately one billion gallons of frozen water in one single moon crater. Of course you would need purifying systems for removing toxins like mercury, as well as systems for reclaiming gray water. When melted and broken down into its components, water ice could also be used as fuel for rockets. there is enough water there to last small colonies for years and years....and years, by which point we would have solved any water worries. The frozen water is short term, to help get the whole thing running rather than a permanent thing.

Besides a Moon Outpost could prove key in future space exploration and scientific discoveries about our known universe, just because you cant comprehend how something can be achieved because you didn't bother to do any research into it, doesn't make it a pipe dream.

I don't know. We've made some huge scientific advancements in the last 100 years. Way more than anyone could have possibly imagined. Humans are pretty resourceful, I'm sure someone will figure something out (Y) I don't know if I'd want to live there though. I find it so beautiful to look at from here. I wouldn't want to give up the view :)

Quite possible, each generation finds advancements in science or technology hard to believe. My generation used to joke about going to the moon, all of us thinking that was dumb and impossible. Twenty years from now there may be some daily space travel. Keep your mind open for possibilities.

I wonder, if all planets were living, would we be diseases like little viruses and bacteria are to us?

If someone comes up with a way of profiteering off the moon there will be people living there in my opinion. Don't see it happening any time soon though, the cost of doing anything there right now simply eliminates any hope of profitability.

There's ice and other minerals on the moon -- mining the moon would actually be a very lucrative business and probably will happen 20 to 30 years in the future. I've read and watched all types of things on the eventual 'colonization' of the moon and it gives me no reason to believe that humanity wont reach for the stars and naturally expand throughout the Solar System, and eventually the galaxy -- and the moon is the obvious stepping stone. More importantly, because the moon lacks a large amount of gravity, it can be used as a sort of launching/weigh station for human travel to more research or habitat worthy places -- like Mars or the moons of Jupiter! It's all quite exciting actually. And I believe NASA and its Russian and European counterparts already have feasible plans in place.

I think the people who are suggesting humans will live on the moon don't understand the financial burden that would cause. Between sending people there, giving them equipment so they can breathe, and don't forget food since no plant life can grow on the moon. Not only that, but they'd have to build roads, schools, houses, stores. And figure out ways to make things not float away into oblivion because of the lack of gravity.
    In short, it's simply impossible.

...wait, you think if they were going to start colonising the moon they would start off by building a city or town? No, would take years before civilians would be allowed to inhabit it, maybe 15-20 years, small teams of very well trained people with trades and skills would go up first and you grow crops in greenhouse like structures not on the moons surface...so yes, plants could grow on the moon. Generate a small ecosystem and you have vegetables and plants that also generate oxygen food. Minerals to mine and process... etc

A moon colony would become self sufficient. But we are talking about years in the future here, we're not colonizing the moon any time soon.

No, I never said that they'd immediately have to build a city or a town. I was just pointing out that they eventually would. I still believe it wouldn't be possible for people to colonize the moon, but I could be proven wrong if scientists could scrape up enough money to do anything to work towards it.

Well seeing how the European, British, Russian and American space agencies are all backing the idea... I cant see money being too much of issue, also such companies like google have backed space programs such as meteor mining, I can see them backing such a thing too.
