Ladies, you might admire that guy at the gym for his burly biceps and pecs, but he might not be as dreamy as he looks. Men who are obsessed with beefing up their muscles are more likely to be sexist, new research finds, according to LiveScience.

"We think men who hold oppressive beliefs about women and gender equality are also more likely to endorse traditional stereotypes of masculinity, which includes the muscular physique," study researcher Viren Swarmi, of the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom, told LiveScience.

So why are gym rats more likely to be hostile toward women? Swarmi said it may be a reaction to changing gender roles. "In societies where patriarchal structures are being challenged, some men may seek to reassert their masculinity by enhancing their physiques," the scientist said.

Meanwhile, researchers suspect that men who engage in this kind of thinking may be suffering from negative body image themselves. They're also more likely to go for skinny girls: past research has found that men who hold stronger oppressive beliefs are more likely to find thinner women attractive. Doesn't exactly sound like Mr. Right ...

There is a difference between noting differences and sexism.

No two people are the same, that doesn't mean they shouldn't have equal opportunity or be judged by their differences.

Sexism is trying judging someone not on the content of their character, but by their gender, or not allowing equal opportunity due to gender.

It's wrong to stereotype men who are very muscular as being sexist. Anyone can be sexist, it doesn't even matter.

The question really was "Are they more likely to be sexist then men without super-muscles" and the answer to that would be "yes they are more likely to be sexist" for the reason stated in the question above.

Our paths crossed, just outta sync. I was stationed at Misawa in 1958-1959 with the 6921st Security Wing. I trained in Shoto-kan and Shudo-kan and then Goshin-jitsu-no-kata after returning to the states. Still hit Gold's six days a week and do katas privately. I'm usually the oldest person in the gym but I'm too old to stop now. Besides, I enjoy working out. Keeps everything in working order. Cheers-TommyB

Oh, I can totally see this! Any man that feels the need to make himself look like that is also going to have attitudes about women that come from the dark ages.

you are so still in the dark. let us see, oh yeah...the last time i saw a woman beater, he was not muscular at all! really now, who is better?
  • Jo jerry.a... 2012/06/27 09:00:32
    Jo
who said anything about women beaters? and who said anything about one being better than the other? We're talking about sexism, i.e., attitudes about women that are over the top traditional; so what are YOU talking about?

men beat women to make themselves feel better too. which would you prefer?
Just becuase a man wants to look good that is wrong as per your statement. yet women have been doing this type of thing for ages as well, and they use things to lie.
padded push-up bras corset type clothing, lipstick to give thin lipped girls the appearance of thicker lips, hair extentions. at least when I work out what you see is what you get.

it was all started about "attitudes about women that come from the dark ages" well back then women were beat down when they were out of line. but obviously you have no clue about history outside of those commercials on the discovery channel.
  • Jay jerry.a... 2012/06/29 13:29:15
    Jay
try not to take offense to a comment. It show your weak state of mind. "beat down when they were out of line" ? No, women were beaten. period. And I'm sure you watch the history channel AKA the jesus-and- aliens-channel. Also you just wandered into another topic. try and keep your mind on course, unless of course you have ADHD, then you need medication.
  • Jo jerry.a... 2012/06/27 15:40:42

what do men that beat women have to do with this? and I never said a man that works out is "wrong", I just made an observation about attitudes that tend to be commonplace among them.

  • Jo Kibbles 2012/06/27 15:42:42

I didnt say it did--sexism doesnt necessarily mean that they respect women less, they just tend to have old school attitudes about women.

lol! I'm sure you do--its sounds like you dont have a clear understanding of what sexism is, so it makes perfect sense that you would "call BS":)))
