Ladies, you might admire that guy at the gym for his burly biceps and pecs, but he might not be as dreamy as he looks. Men who are obsessed with beefing up their muscles are more likely to be sexist, new research finds, according to LiveScience.

"We think men who hold oppressive beliefs about women and gender equality are also more likely to endorse traditional stereotypes of masculinity, which includes the muscular physique," study researcher Viren Swarmi, of the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom, told LiveScience.

So why are gym rats more likely to be hostile toward women? Swarmi said it may be a reaction to changing gender roles. "In societies where patriarchal structures are being challenged, some men may seek to reassert their masculinity by enhancing their physiques," the scientist said.

Meanwhile, researchers suspect that men who engage in this kind of thinking may be suffering from negative body image themselves. They're also more likely to go for skinny girls: past research has found that men who hold stronger oppressive beliefs are more likely to find thinner women attractive. Doesn't exactly sound like Mr. Right ...

'In the socially complex human environment, pro-social behavior secures status, and not aggression,' surmises study co-author Michael Naef from Royal Holloway London."

You would choose to make a decision "wrong" based on ONE study? In some human cultures aggressiveness does secure status, no? I understand the author's point but would draw no far-reaching conclusions from it. THX for taking time to share the study.

...and what, pray tell, do they mean precisely by "sexist"?

The most (and quite frankly only) accurate statement of that entire post was "We think"...who gives a rats backside about what some kooked up no-name pseudo-science publication thinks? Sort of like taking relationship advice from yahoo news.

Someone's body type doesn't make them sexist. To me a man that works out just shows that he cares about the way he looks and his health and nothing more. I think sexism has more to do with their background or what(not who) they grew up around.

This study doesn't seem to acknowledge that lifting weights is something that a lot of people treat like a sport. It doesn't necessarily reflect ideologies.

Not really, maybe in fairy tales but most women usually want to be independent and fend for them selves they dont need a man to protect them

Odd; I have seen a fair share of women who share your belief; but I have also seen an equal number who would be very happy to return to the 50’s mindset; and have that strong man to protect them. The odd part; they accept your belief at wanting to be independent far easier than I’ve seen those who wish to be independent accepting theirs. I’ve even seen a few called “mentally disturbed” because they didn’t want to be the one in charge or independent.

So, believing in "patriarchal structures" is sexism now?
    Fine, then I'm sexist.
My future wife will be my equal, but as the one who will be paying the bills it's only right that I make most of the decisions.
No, I'm not a big guy, I do work out some.
