Are Muscle Men More Sexist Toward Women?

Ladies, you might admire that guy at the gym for his burly biceps and pecs, but he might not be as dreamy as he looks. Men who are obsessed with beefing up their muscles are more likely to be sexist, new research finds, according to LiveScience.

weightlifting

"We think men who hold oppressive beliefs about women and gender equality are also more likely to endorse traditional stereotypes of masculinity, which includes the muscular physique," study researcher Viren Swarmi, of the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom, told LiveScience.

So why are gym rats more likely to be hostile toward women? Swarmi said it may be a reaction to changing gender roles. "In societies where patriarchal structures are being challenged, some men may seek to reassert their masculinity by enhancing their physiques," the scientist said.

Meanwhile, researchers suspect that men who engage in this kind of thinking may be suffering from negative body image themselves. They're also more likely to go for skinny girls: past research has found that men who hold stronger oppressive beliefs are more likely to find thinner women attractive. Doesn't exactly sound like Mr. Right ...

A lot of them also seem very shallow, One time when I went to the gym I was working out and these two hot guys who had a lot of muscle told me that It was good I was working out because I needed to lose more weight cause I was a little heavy, I was a size 6 juniors when they said that.

Personally for myself, huge bulging biceps are an overkill, not sexy; some to the point of gross looking.

When I was young I looked just like that. But I was a kitten to ladies especially. Plus, I never got into fights. I found out that "workng out" made me feel a lot better. Later I learned that it was because it released endorphins into the brain that actually do fight depression and make you feel better mentally. AWW! I just read the "top opinion". I wasn't gay but if a lot of them are...let them be. And below this, I NEVER was a "bully" to anyone. I did feel better about myself though.

I know what you mean, hell I started working out because I was tired of being the nerd that got picked so much. Once I bulked up they stayed well away. Also working out and feeling that sweet burn and soreness after I work out makes me feel so alive.

I've had a few friends and acquaintances that were into the "Muscle Builder" mindset - both men and women. For the most part, I think a majority of them do have a fragile ego and body dysmorphia (they aren't happy with how they look). Again, for the most part, they are more forceful with women (or men in the case of the female muscle builder I know), but they try to intimidate members of their same sex.
One particularly obnoxious bonehead became incensed when I wouldn't get off the sidewalk by the beach for him. He told me, "Squirt, I could pound you into a rat-hole. You barely come up to my chin".
When I explained to him about angles, leverage and punching power and took two steps towards him, he said, "Well, O.K.", and walked around me.
Some of them are using steroids - those you don't even want to be around unless you have a concealed carry permit and are packing a .357 Magnum or bigger.

To some degree yes, I do not Know about the "Muscle" part but I have been called sexist (chauvinistic in my parlance), because I treat women with deference and respect when possible and disassociate with those not respectable (as I do with males of that ilk). Meaning I open doors for the ladies and I listen to those not drama queens (same for the males drama queens are irritating). I do expect a woman to think and most do, better than a lot of males in these days of "metro-sexual" nothingness. The females I accept are aware thinking individuals that are wonderful effective allies in life, business, and any kind of fight. The problem here for me to answer this is I do not associate much with myopic folks in or out of the gym.

Not true from my experience. It's men who doubt their own masculinity who tend to be sexist. Working out doesn't mean you're insecure. Wanting your SO to be fit and "going for skinny women" aren't the same thing either.

Sexist...no. Most of them seem to be arrogant pricks to whomever they meet. I don't see gender as much of a factor. They see everyone as weaker than them.

WIthout the research to substantiate my opinion, logic would suggest that this is certainly a strong possibility. "Muscle men", (those going WAY beyond just the need to keep physically fit) certainly must be psychologically compensating in some ways (and some of them probably very pathologic). Low self-esteem would be the underlying theme in those aberrations deemed pathologic, and with feelings of being "less than" at one's back, the outward behavioral expression could then easily be machismo. Makes sense.

its not about muscles, although that most likely makes a man feel more confident. its really about the mindset and the environment he was raised in. if he was taught to respect women and treat them with decency rather than a sexist prick then he wont be one. but if he was raised to be a sexist prick or many of those were involved in his upbringing then he will turn out that way, muscle or not.

I refuse to believe that any 'class' of people would be filling an idea. Maybe individuals, but saying that an entire class of people feel that way is itself proving how close minded an individual is.

Hmmm, I think we're confusing vanity with sexism here. This fits into the jealousy category if you ask me. Just like guys being intimidated by very attractive women, confidence can come across as arrogance or a condescending demeanor.

It's funny how I'm sitting here typing this and there's an Old Navy ad with a chick standing in a skimpy tank top and matching panties staring me in the face. Are they selling intellect?

I agree, this seems like it's more an attempt to smear those who do work out. i know the gents I work out with are fine young men who have respect.

Couldn't agree more. Makes us people look bad. I mean, why should we have to put up with every ones insecurities. So because one cant feel good about ones self, we have to share their miseries alongside with them.

Gay men don't hate women any more than straight women hate women.
