Are lavish weddings a waste of money?

My husband's son is getting married in two weeks. A large lavish wedding with over 200 guests. Being a young couple just starting out it seems to me a small wedding with family and close friends and a check for the difference would make more sense.

What do you think...a lavish wedding or a small wedding?!

It just depends on what you can afford and its a day to remember forever so if you want it to be lavish then i don't see a problem with it but that doesn't mean small weddings are bad.

I had a lavish wedding and it was big bucks, but today, it's almost normal to spend over 30K.. I just got back from a friends wedding that was over 100K.. I personally didn't care because at the end of the day, I can barely remember who all was there or even what we had for dinner.. But I left it to my wife.. If you use a venue, they have you.. everything costs money.. and it isn't cheap..

Weddings have gotten so out of hand. Expensive to attend also ! Some of the registries are ridiculous. One wedding asked the guests to help cover the cost of their honeymoon to the Bahamas. We didn't make that wedding. Or the one in Puerto Vallarta. Or the one coming up in Tampa, FL. The bride is from NYC. The groom from Dallas. So why Florida during hurricane season?

I will never shoot down any excuse to party or hold a festival. But.... Getting married is just plain silly. The entire marriage concept is merely a left over tradition from when grooms owned their brides. It can be replaced with a simple business agreement.

Weddings...hmm..to share a celebration of 2 people starting a life together...small wedding is fine..the rest is at least to me a display of wealth? give them money they'll need it!

we had a small wedding, my parents and his...but a great big party afterward for families and friends
some of the weddings and gowns now are just such a waste of money, its appalling

I never cared to spend a fortune in order to show off for others, but I can appreciate how some people long for and actually have the large ones.
