Olympic sponsorship by brands like McDonald's and Coca-Cola are in question by the International Olympic Committee. In an interview with the UK’s Financial Times, the IOC president Jacques Rogge said global obesity concerns had put a "question mark" over the sponsorship of the Olympics by high-calorie, junk food brands. Do you think the IOC should ban junk food ads from the Olympics or are they going too far?

I'm in favor of more fast food ads than we have had historically.

People need to take responsibility for their own diets - it's not McDonald's or Coca-Cola's fault that people eat their food in excess. Statements like this by folks like Jacques Rogge only serve to further the perception that people don't need to be responsible for their own actions.

Aside from the slim portion of this country that will think eating McDonald's will turn them into an Olympian, I think we are fine.

Fast Food and Faster Sports get along just fine IMHO. I dealt with the IOC as a major Olympic Sponsor years ago, and they were a real piece of work... all about the Benjamins.

If the IOC is so concerned about obesity, they should ban fat people from attending the Olympics.

Good luck finding a sponsor heavyweight like McDonald's... you drop them and you'll be crying "foul" because you lack funding.

Why not? They have money, like all the others. And isn't McD's the official fast food restuarant of the Olympics? I heard they have one in Olymlic Village. Quit pretending the atheletes don't like a burger and fries now and then.
    It's naive.

Not at all! They should have more healthy sponsors. It's just silly, really. To have such unhealthy brands sponsoring basically the biggest fitness event in the world.

That's who has the money, so that's who sponsors it, Lol.
Who do you think sponsors the sports teams world wide?????
Beer and Tobacco and Junk food companies, Lol, only in the last few decades has smoking cigarettes been banned on commercials supporting sports, but they still support sports teams.
Ironic, is it not, that the very things that prevent most people from becoming world class athletes are the very things the sponsors make, Lol, Now that's funny, I mean real funny, because if people didn't want it that way they could boycott the Olympics, and I myself do just that, but I'm the minority, most people don't care who the sponsors are as the Olympics always have sellout crowds.
One day after drugs are legalized, they will be sponsoring the Olympics (hide and watch) to get more people using their products, that's they way it works to get people using your product, to sponsor those that excel in life, Lol.
And most won't figure it out until they are diagnosed with diabetes, cancer or alcoholism, and by that time it will be to late to change, and the sponsors won't want anything to do with you either, because you would be 'bad press' in their mind, Lol.
It's a win-win situation for the sponsors, they get more lifelong customers for sponsoring the Olympics, and never ha...

it goes both ways really, in one sense it's counter productive to the overall message and fighting obesity and in the other is...well... money.

Ether way it seems a bit late now to start questioning sponsorships.

The IOC spends too much on 5 star hotels and meals and entertaining themselves and big wigs, as well as taking lavish salaries.

I agree, they COULD use management as good as McD's. SO could the UN.

Yes, because Olympians, (and people who exercise) burn through the calories and fat. People who don't work out and have a regular Mcky D's, BK's, etc. diet will naturally get fat. Now You'd think Subway would be a better choice of sponsor, considering the negative publicity McDonald's gets.

But a normal sized burger fries and drink are no worse than a giant sub with all the cheese and sauces and meats.

As always, it is about moderation. No one should eat McD's every day or every week.
