Olympic sponsorship by brands like McDonald's and Coca-Cola are in question by the International Olympic Committee. In an interview with the UK’s Financial Times, the IOC president Jacques Rogge said global obesity concerns had put a "question mark" over the sponsorship of the Olympics by high-calorie, junk food brands. Do you think the IOC should ban junk food ads from the Olympics or are they going too far?

I get where they are coming from asking this question, but really it is up to the individual athletes to accept a sponsors. Also, the Olympics is a wholesome, positive thing in the world and when something like that happens people need a company to invest in them or they will never make it there.

Seems like the Olympics is becoming more of a competition between the worlds biggest brand names than between the worlds best athletes. Sad. They don't sponsor the event to do anyone any favors, they only want the chance to force more advertising into our lives and to increase their own profits. They do some charitable things, but they can afford to do a hell of a lot more. Companies like McDonalds do more harm to society than good. I'm really surprised that there are so many people who don't mind the Olympics being sold for advertising space.

They have the money to sponsor. Ultimately it's up to the Olympic committee to decide who sponsors them. Personally I think it's an oxymoron, however it always comes down to the dollar, who needs it, and who has it.

Sports are all about health. Olympics being sponsored by junk food brands is totally wrong. Sadly, however, it attracts most people.

If Subway would give them money they would be a sponsor. I doubt the IOC told Subway they couldn't sponsor the Olympics.

I do like some of their food, but it doesn't seem appropriate.

Not that the Olympic committees (or whoever authorizes such things) will let that influence their decisions in the slightest.

Believe it or not, it is possible to make healthy choices at places like McDs and such... I'm thinking that if fast food places are sponsoring a healthy event that that might encourage those companies to offer even more healthy choices...

Uh, the Olympics are about "exercise" and "being active." I don't think McDonald's fits into that category.

Who else is gonna provide the money? Its not like they are forcing you to eat their products. I personally dont like fast food chains because they are a rip off but if theyre gonna sponsor it then more power to them and putting the money to some use other than to buy chemicals to inject into cows

I'm tired of McDonalds commercializing high-energy activities such as surfing and Olympic sports when eating McDonalds food makes you feel fatigued and sluggish.

It isn't about whether or not their food is healthy - and blaming THEM for obesity is still stupid.

The Olympics are a huge event, and it takes a lot of sponsorship to keep them going. If these places want to sponsor it, then it is between them and whomever handles such business dealings for the Olympics. I'm getting really sick and tired of us "fighting obesity" by trying to go after places like McDonalds. I don't eat there, that's my choice. That doesn't mean I am going to run around and try to take it away from everyone.

Junk food is the choice and responsibility of the CONSUMER or the consumer's PARENT(s). Until EVERYONE takes ownership of that, obesity is never going away no matter how many bans are in place.

Although the Olympics were designed as an "Amateur" event, they are BIG BIG business. Any company who wants to contribute this in return for a connection with the Olympic Games has the right to do so (i.e. sponsorship). If you like it or not, it really doesn't matter because it is going to happen for as long as all of us are alive.

Maybe but you cant deny that if McDonalds (and other fast food industries) didn't exist then the problem with obesity would at least a little less.

    Umm, yeah I can.

McDonalds and other fast food wouldn't exist if people didn't eat it. It's the person's choice to eat it or not, and they pay more than making a quick meal at home. People are lazy, and if they weren't lazy then eating McDonalds wouldn't make them fat. You don't get fat because you eat McDonalds, you get fat because you eat McDonalds and then sit on the couch doing nothing.

Get off their asses and do something and they can eat whatever they want. Blaming McDonalds for obesity fits in well though, lazy society gets fat and then takes the easy, lazy, excuse that it's someone elses fault.
  • gary Will Fl... 2012/07/12 23:50:40

that's like saying if there was no food people would be fat ether.
  • Will Fl... gary 2012/07/14 19:23:57
    Will Fletcher
I'm not saying that... I'm saying if the fast food industry did not exist then the amount of people who are morbidly obese would be considerably less (depending on the scenario in which said person became fat). If you do not eat a large quantity of foods that have a high percentage of fat and maintain a reasonably active lifestyle then it is unlikely that you are going to get fat
