Attention all Facebookers: Tell us if you've heard this before. Your online privacy on the world's largest social network is dwindling. Well, here we go again.
On July 12,
Facebook added a new feature to its site--tracking who has seen group posts. In other words, if you go on a group, click on a note they posted, and then log off, your name will be listed as one of the users that saw that post.
LinkedIn.com has similar feature, telling users who has viewed their own profiles, but that social network is known more as a job search site for professionals. Over the years, Facebook has gone from a fun and easy way to connect with family, friends, colleagues to an online giant that dictates how the information you provide to the site is used. And not everyone is happy about that.
Personalized advertisements geared towards users, the recent
Facebook timeline revamp, and the fact friends can see what you "Liked" and more, have led to controversy. While the Facebook feature is limited to groups, it is not out of the realm of possibility that it could extend to your timeline. Sure, knowing who viewed the pictures you posted in 2007 might be kind of cool, but what if you're just browsing around? Do you want your name popping up everywhere? It looks like Facebook stalking could be on the outs.

Anyone who would willingly choose to have his/her name, face, personal information posted online for the whole world to see, deserves whatever exposure he/she receives. Even if one's name isn't attached to the account, everything that is posted on Facebook is attached to an email account & is trackable by any savvy techie. It isn't as if there is no information or warnings out there about the problems Facebook causes.
I personally do not care... not one iota.
I wouldn't use Facebook if they paid me. My privacy is far more important than the smidgin of convenience it might offer. Those I am close to know what's happening with me because we email or talk on the phone. I believe in personalized contact, not impersonal "posting" so that everyone can see.
I do see the value for artists & some businesses. However, for personal use, Facebook is not something I would ever take part in... because of the privacy issues.
Bottom line, don't put anything on the internet that you wouldn't want the world to see...

I miss the old fashion way where people actually talked to you on the phone, face to face and/or received cards/letters in mail; which I still do sometimes...it's better and more personal too at times!!
I also deleted Facebook #2 (1 1/2 years) and MySpace (5 years) beginning of this year for the same reasons; cleaning up my social life online, if you will?
