No one likes a Debbie Downer... and it seems like there's good reason not to! According to Trevor Blake, author of "Three Simple Steps: A Map to Success in Business and Life," listening to complaining is actually bad for your brain in many ways.

In the book, Blake explains what neuroscientists have discovered. The results show that the brain works more like a muscle than previously thought, so if someone is constantly barraging you with negative thoughts, you're more likely to act in a negative way as well.

Plus, being exposed to complaining actually makes you dumber! According to research, if people are exposed to 30 minutes or more of negativity, neurons are actually being peeled away in the brain's hippocampus. "Basically, it turns your brain to mush," Blake says. Do you think people who complain are bad for your brain?

INC.COM reports:
Exposure to nonstop negativity actually impairs brain function. Here's how to defend yourself against colleagues who complain.

Complaining is resisting what is, which is stressful and draining in itself. Better for everyone's mental health to just accept what is, though easier said than done

I have people in my life who complain about EVERYTHING and it's very draining emotionally so I can see where it could start to do damage after a while.

I do not believe the research is accurate. Hell who knows anymore, seems like everything you eat, or breath is bad for you. I do complain I know. My son told me I was whiny because I was complaining about my husband working me like a man. My husband came up with a ditty that irritates me but shuts down my complaining licky split, he says " All aboard, here comes the negative train".

But there are some complaints that are legit, and some people who only complain when its about something serious. I don't mind if someone needs to vent about something, as long as its not their normal interaction style.

Too much negativity can bring you down. It can rub off and lower your mood, and increase your stress levels.

We all need to vent sometimes, it's healthy. But those constant complainers are depressing and nerve wreaking.

Hmm, now i dont like people who constantly complain about the little stuff, but what are we actually calling "complainers" here. It seems to me that alot of things wouldnt get done if it wasnt for people fighting for what was right or wanting change something within our modern society. Would you call the women who protested for women rights, complainers? or what about the men and women who fought for black rights? Someone complaining about the customer service they recieved at their local store, or what about the person complaining, that they're starving on the steet. Before ranting on about "how complainers make you dumber" what if everyone stopped complaining, what would change? people would starve, women wouldnt be allowed to vote, coloured people would still be slaves and your average wage would never increase. So dont tell me listening to complaints is making you dumber, when infact it can change things to make life easier.

Positivity/loves the good, elevating, light and infinite force. Hate, stress, "complaining" tear the world down. The world can be anything, you create it. Don't let oters tear you down, just take care of your own attitude.

Really depends on the situation. Sometimes complaints are legitimate issues that need to be addressed, especially in the workplace. However complaining about insignificant things like rain can be bad for you because it's best to look on the bright side of things.

True, sometimes complaints should be resolved properly because there are legitimate problems that need to be addressed. Just ignoring problems leads to instability.

I know that I feel worse when the people around me are being negative. I know that not everyone will agree on everything, so I prefer to talk to likeminded people (and see different prospectives too) rather than wasting my time arguing with people. And in general, I try to see the good in people.
